Yeah, I saw that and the PA definitely looks better than the previous screenshots. And it's a converted file if I remember correctly, so this is a good sign. But even then, the skin on the guys look a bit soft to me, it could be because of the compression, but you never know. Then, it could also have been the cameras that they filmed the movie with, you never know.

I think I would be a bit ok with that as long as it didn't look like an upscaled DVD, if the Trilogy is great, I wouldn't mind double-dipping for the Extended Editions and hope that they really go all out on those.

I'm not sure that a few years diffrence of post production would necessarily mean that the first would be inferior. Just a couple of years, not a quantum leap.

It's a quantum leap in digital imaging though. That's when the DI process was just beginning to take hold.

"O brother where art thou" was an early movie to be done entirely with DI, at a resolution of less than 2k, that was 2000. The first 4k DI was spiderman 2 in 2004. Those years made a big difference in how films made their way into the digital domain.

So confusing, I'll just wait for the reviews then
Within the next few days maybe?
Since people already got their copy's, how the hell did they get them anyways?

Well, the fundamental difference is, the master format for Fellowship is film. The master format for ROTK and TT are digital files. It's a lot easier to put digital files on a digital format and have it look nice.

Even if the PQ is only a moderate upgrade from the DVD (which I suspect when we see the actual thing it'll be more than that), the 1.5 DTS core track will be worth the upgrade alone over my previous listening experience with the 448kbps DD track on the DVDs.

A year is atleast 2 generations in the computer world so in 2 years there would be 4 generations worth of computer upgrades for the digital processing.

The early copies are the screeners.

There are no individual covers.

One case for the movies and the special features discs, one case for the digital copies.

Warner decided to save some $$$ and only use two cases instead of 3 per shipment

Edit: Another shot from the guy at AVS

All I hear when something like is this is said, is my brain, yelling "cheapies!!!!!!!!!"

Seriously though, those screens at AVS look like whoever took the caps was doing a really bad job at it. The ROTK caps look great, but I imagine that was because the people on that forum told him how to do it after he screwed up the caps for FOTR.

Also, having just recently watched the films again, I can tell you that FOTR has a significant difference in video quality from TTT and ROTK, because of the way the films were treated in post-production. FOTR was in film, TTT and ROTK were in digital. Digital is easier to turn to a digital format, simple as that.

I for one am not worried. I will be buying the set day one.

I think this one from RotK looks great (there are several on the end of the 2nd to last page and the last page he took using a different method than the FotR caps) :

It's hard to screw up anything but colors and contrast when taking screen caps that way. What's more likely is, the screen caps are just fine, but Warner neglected to remaster the first film and used the same master they've been showing on HDTV for years.

the first film never looked that great in terms of HD PQ anyways. I doubt they just said, lets not bother with the first film, we'll just do the second two. That makes no sense

The last ones he did...looked great i agree but as has been stated FOTR was film its going to be different then TT and ROTK. I'm good with the PQ its more on the AQ side that I'm fussy over....
