That the visuals can hold up after nearly 10 years is pretty astonishing. I think that speaks to the quality of the films more than anything. Gollum, Davey Jones, and King Kong paved the way for Avatar.

If you had any doubts that Gollum was insane, that scene where he gets into an argument with Smeagol about the Hobbits should've erased them.

I don't get why everyone thinks the effects should be less impressive due to the resolution of Blu-ray. Film has a higher resolution, so if it looked good in the theater, it looks good here.

I suppose they look dated if you're comparing them to brand new 2010-era effects - but that's beyond unfair. The effects were always going to become dated sooner or later. That's why it's so great that the films have so much heart and soul. The effects aren't the important part.

QFT

I was just noticing that it might not look as seamless, but no less impressive

Plus, like I was saying, the physical creations i.e. the costumes, sets, camera work, makeup, etc always shone through for me more than the CGI did in terms of visuals, as the world of Middle Earth was so meticulously crafted that you never once doubted it was real while watching the films.

I will remember Avatar until senile dementia sets in and I start forgetting everything. I would even compare the world Cameron created on Pandora to the world Peter Jackson created with Middle Earth.

Gollum specifically "paved the way" for Avatar.

He was the character that convinced Cameron the motion capture was close to the point where it needed to be for Avatar.

Until LOTR came around, I had always thought Jurassic Park had a stranglehold on greatest visual effects of all time. I can't believe I forgot that one.

The movies that changed movies in terms of tech would be

2001 A Space Odyssey
Star Wars trilogy
Jurassic Park
LOTR

I didn't think he looked that impressive at all.

The technology behind putting him on screen = impressive to me.

The actual look of the character = not.

IMO Davy Jones is better than Gollum...and the avatars/Na'vi (though they looked incredible)...yea I said it.

I'd put Terminator 2 on that list, the effects in that one are still quite good today and better than some current movies...20 years later.

of course compared with today's tech it's not impressive anymore. but in 2002/03 there was nothing like it. not just gollum but treebeard as well.

I was never impressed with Gollum period. Not just compared to today's stuff.

I thought the other effects in the films looked much better (since you mentioned Treebeard, I thought he looked awesome).

when you see the movie in blu ray you will realise that gollum and treebeard are the only CGI that still isn't very noticeable. in hd the orcs, the digital horses, minas tirith and helm's deep now become very easy to see that they were CGI ... with the DVD i never noticed that.

I personally thought the whole trilogy hung on the way gollum was portrayed and the way he looked.
