There is also the Korean version, which will be a region A (maybe a region free) to look at. I am wondering how that would look and it might be a alternative to the NA release if it turn's out to look better?

I am from Korea, I would definitely go that route if necessary, pending reviews of course.

Most seem to think Metropolitan is simply distributing the Warner release in France with their own packaging, but the back covers indicate that it is Region B coded, and if the discs are indeed Region B coded, then they can't be the Warner discs.
Wow, a potential different transfer?
I seriously doubt it though

I am sure they might be coming from the same master but did they apply the same amount of DNR or work on them before transfert to BD? It's all speculation but we have seen movies release in different countries having quite a different range of PQ rating before

While It would be nice[r] to get a transfer using the old master with a minimal amount of DNR (which is obviously not happening with Warner's NA release) but that still wouldn't hugely improve the situation, Fellowship would still look just as dated as it does now.

What this trilogy needs is a brand new mastering, which only Warner/NL can do.

Still, a transfer without DNR is better than a transfer with DNR I guess.

I don't think they are out of print...... just out of stock I guess..... I'm guessing most people who wanted these movies got them already, and now with a Blu-ray release pending, most people probably aren't buying the DVDs, so retailers aren't carrying them...... (just a thought)

and YES.... I know we're talking about different versions of the films.

The best I'd hope for is for better compression like the Watchmen blu-ray distributed overseas by Paramount. If there's a beautiful looking remaster of Fellowship I'm sure they're not holding it back from the biggest market for this movie.

If Warner/NL botches these AND the EE version, there will be a Nerd Revolt.

The transfer provides the film as ever. It is beautiful and every shot delights us with an accuracy totally projecting. The moments of excellent day with a sublime light and sparkle stunning color. Those of night are not left with black and contrasting abyssal ideals. Even the toughest to transcribe High Definition inundate us with a great finesse. The quality is such that there is no grain, just tiny pins, the only true flat on Blu-ray remains the rear, and the depth of field that can sometimes seem a little too soft and not not always generate impressive relief, moderate as parsimonious. The dive is exemplary in the tight framing and makes the kind of tribute to the artistic work. Imperfect, Blu-ray is wonderful and allows comfortable viewing for this incredible film ...

Just start a thread in the trading forum saying Want to Buy LOTR DVD, someone will be looking to get rid of theirs now that the blu-ray is coming out. That's where I got mine a year or so ago, got a really good price on the extended edition book-looking sets from a member here.

Yeah, having a rough time understanding that google translation... weird mix of good and bad

Not much news on the audio from anywhere though. I remember hearing the EE DVDs at my friend's with a 7.1 pro setup and it was AMAZING.

And like I said, since it has been established that FOTR was produced differently than the last two movies, it may be that there is nothing that can be done to improve it. So the question is: Is the BD noticeably better than the DVD version?

I can only imagine that if the reviewer is seeing good PQ on FOTR, that they are understandably reluctant to say so.

I don't recall where but some pages back someone mention they were in the process of checking all 3 movies?

Someone needs to set them straight and send them the screen shots. That should carry a lot more weight than their own Blu-ray player and TV.

Which brings up a serious question. So all BD players produce the same image? If not, what BD player was used for the screen shots that look so terrible?

'Fellowship' does suffer from DNR and edge enhancement issues, and looks strangely older than it should -- its transfer is fairly inconsistent and almost seems unstable at times. 'Two Towers' is much better, and certainly sharper when it comes to fine details, but still has some problems, although mainly in the EE department. However, 'Return of the King' looks much more like all three films should. I'm still in the early stages of my analysis, but DNR isn't a significant factor (if one at all), the image is quite crisp, and I haven't been distracted by any significant EE, non-source inconsistencies, or instabilities. At least not yet

Again, this is just an early assessment -- a full review will be coming soon -- but I thought you might be interested in my initial findings. Thanks as always for posting.

"Our own" pro reviewer.
That doesn't sound like it looks good to me.
