Jeff Kleist of The Digital Bits has alredy commented several times that there were indeed several new masters minted for the Blu-ray release until they came to an agreement on which to use for the discs. Just check out the Digital Bits thread or Penton-Man's thread.

I suggest you also follow Squid's advice.

Exactly. There is just no getting around the DNR and combined with Daves review as well as some other first hand reports, these captures are VERY telling of the final release I am sure.

Also, as has been mentioned, Erics shots are indeed captures and they are accurate.

Kleist can say the moon is purple, that doesn't make it true.

The BD's look virtually identical to the old HDTV broadcast versions + the application of DNR. With how technology had advanced in the mastering process since the old master was produced there's no way that would be the case if they had recently remastered it, there would be a clear and blatant improvement.

I'm sorry but it is just blatantly obvious those two came from the same master. It cannot be more clear.

The scary thing is if either Jeff or Bill Hunt said the moon was indeed purple, there are people here that would believe it!

Let me clarify: FOTR probably can't be made to look much better without spending a terrible amount of money to make a new DI. But why spend that money when Peter Jackson himself approves this transfer and makes such a venture an unnecessary expense?

Well I read it and nothing. Just some claims that LOTR looks bad from the start and that they did indeed remaster this.

Penton-Man is an executive at Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. He is very knowledgeable about the entire process from capture all the way to the disc, and every step along the way. (workflow)

I suggest you ask him why "frame" grabs are a faulty science. There are technical performance based issues in players and displays that he can explain, and why grabbing a single "frame" is like tossing a dart at a board in what result you may achieve.

And if Eric had a screen shot of a purple moon, a whole different set of people would believe it.

Yeah, a faulty capture will make FOTR look awful. How come every capture of movies that have good transfers magically look great?

I am not claiming that any LOTRs looks good or bad. I have not seen them.

If you dont want to ask Penton, fine. But you are missing out on a tremendous amount of valuable information from an industry proffessional.

Your understanding of a "frame" from a Blu-ray disc is flawed. A "frame" on a Blu-ray disc is not the same as a frame of film.

Penton is a great guy. Its quite fun chatting with him and you will learn a ton.
