You should read better;
I wasn't saying (old) film isn't HD, I was giving the misconception by many regular consumers
who think that older films weren't shot in HD,
as an example similar to why people might think that a big film such as 'The Lord Of The Rings'
should look amazingly clear.

I would say that too many people here don't necesarily understand that a soft picture doesn't always mean a bad transfer. Directors sometimes shoot their films that way as an artistic choice. Think about the first time Gandalf the White shows up in a glowy soft image. It was meant to look that way. It gives you that dream like state that makes a lot of sense for a fantasy film.

That's what I basically said... what the heck?...

As long as Star Wars isn't loaded with DNR and EE I bet most fans will be happy with the quality.

Though, I don't know if the HD masters are really good enough for a Blu-ray release. I think the Master for the Star Wars DVD was made in 2003.

But I think its the same thing with those films. Not the same quantity of people, no, but the level of expectation for quality was just as high.

For years people waited for Gladiator and Braveheart. One got slammed and one received praise, and IMO both were worthy of what they got.

What I am saying is, if Star Wars looks fantastic, nobody will complain.

The original movis of Star Wars will probably be re-work and I don't have a doubt they will look stunning. That said, I am expecting a serious wave of critic when the special effects of the 70's and early 80's are seen for the first time in 1080p. Some people will be in for a serious shock and most likely the complain will come from that angle

Those will be from people who aren't die hard fans. Die hard fans love the 70's special effects, especially compared to the crappy CGI effects.

Which is pretty sad really, when you consider just how revolutionary those affects really were, granted about 30 years ago. I still think they look good today, FWIW,

I see what you. I suppose the action/fantasy/scifi fans might be more vocal about it then the drama fans.

The thing is, those "pre-approved studio images" are scarier than the real thing.

Blade Runner was given great treatment. This is a movie that flopped at the box-office, but the Blu-ray is one of the best out there.

Now you have LOTR that made 3 billion dollars, but was just sloppily put together for the Blu-ray release.

Doesn't make sense to me.

Well, I wasn't even born early enough to see 'Star Wars' at the time of its initial releases.
But I don't have much of a problem with the older special-effects.
If anything it gets its own original style to it.

And sure, you might see a little more "fake" to it in HD.
But I'm pretty sure I'll consider it just the same as I saw it in SD.
In the same way I simply accepted older special-effects while growing up in the '90s.
It is what it is and I've never really been bothered with older films that were made well.

Also, as for the 'The Lord Of The Rings'-Trilogy on BD:
Don't you think this is just a quick first release, kind of like 'Gladiator',
and a more special and better version, such as for the Extended Edition, will come later?...
I dare to bet all my BDs on it...

Yet they went through the trouble of going to a real airport to record real airplane audio.

Did you really just put Star Wars and no complaining in the same sentence Squid?

Ummm, no they didn't just turn out an 8 year old master.

They remastered at least 5 times before it was approved.
