On a related note, I'm surprised by just how well Gollum and Treebeard have aged! Gollum still looks fantastic.

Its all subjective how much DNR, EE, etc.....bothers you. To some, it is a BIG deal (obviously from some of these threads) to others, it is non issue and everything inbetween. Lots of factors can contribute to all this. Personaly, these things drive me nuts.

I'll still buy the set. I'll probably wait till I get a better price on it, but I'll still pick it up at some point. Love the films too much to pass on them, entirely.

Everyone has their own opinion on this matter. People are going to buy this set no matter what is said. I have read the review and am still going to purchase it. If you feel its a waste of cash, dont buy it and write that nice letter to WB telling them why. Me, I cant wait to see it in HD. I am going to have a ring-a-thon here in a bit over a week. Popcorn and kool-aid will be a flowin'

And this is exactly what most of us are upset about. Anyone who has seen FotR knows it has a softer kind of look, that is not the problem. The problem is the technical issues that should not be there and that is what people are rightfully upset about.

"Donnie Darko" is a great example of a movie that is soft from the source, but I still love the Blu-ray, because it's very faithful to the source.

So, it really has nothing to do with a film being soft from the source, but everything to do with old masters and DNR.

Has anyone seen the review at DVDTOWN

"Overall definition remained very good, however. Jagged edges and moiré effects created no concerns, and I also detected no signs of edge enhancement. Source flaws remained absent and never cropped up in this clean transfer"

Taken from the review of FOTR from DVDTOWN

He says there is no edge enhancement and transfer looks as good as intended for FOTR and gave it a B rating in PQ the others he gave A. So to him he says this release is very good. I really don't know what to believe anymore

It's the DNR and the fact it's from a tweaked master that was originally made 8 yrs ago that bugs me.

Thanks for the links, do you know of any others that review LOTR, especially Fellowship as the PQ on that is going to make my final determination on whether to buy the set or not.

The first one really isn't that bad. Its not in the same league of bad as GoNY, or Gladiator, nor does it particularly distract while the film is in motion. The worst thing I could say about it is that its not especially spectacular. The Two Towers and Return of the King both look great. Compared to the DVD's all three films are streets ahead in terms of PQ, even the first film.

This entire situation is not the disaster that this thread seems to think it is. I don't think the average bear will even bat an eyelid at the quality of Fellowship. Its fine.
The Fellowship of the Ring comparing the other movies on DVD has also a different in Quality. So the same on Blu Ray.

I'm still buying.
Am I upset that WB f***ed this up, HELL YEAH, but it is LOTR and I'm going to enjoy this as best as I can. I'll worry about the EE 5 years from now. 5 years is an awfully long time to deny myself...

Some reviewers cannot see DNR & EE, even if it got up and hit them squarely in the head.

I couldn't have said it better.

The greatest excuse for DNR, "Oh no you have it all wrong, the movie was shot soft. The Director wanted wax puppets."

The focus still seems to be on DNR. Maybe Ken can come back and repeat himself on the matter for the 10th time.

Had the studio DNR'd "Star Trek" (2009) this would be the end result.

Heh. I like the pancake makeup excuse, a director liked it so much it was put on the sets and deep background as well.

I am. It is still the best available version until the EE comes out, and I have a finite lifespan.

Just to clarify some things on my behalf. I don't disagree that FOTR is a movie that is softer at the source than the following sequels. What I'm saying is that the DNR is obvious and robs even more detail of a film that was soft in the first place.

Though, another problem is that the transfer comes from a tweaked 8 yr old master.

All that matters is that we are not seeing the full potential of what this movie has to offer on Blu-ray.
