Fellowship IMO, has more bad looking content than good but also has some spectacular looking scenes (Moria for example). When I say bad looking I don't mean horrendous by any means... it's better than the DVD but doesn't compare to the sequels.

Two Towers, I couldn't really fault it, roughly 95% of the film looks stunning on my system... maybe members with better systems/bigger screens will be able to find more faults, but I can't

Return Of The King is meant to be better still but I have only flicked through it briefly.

Has anyone noticed that the cover art for the Ralph Bakshi film has the ring and engraving from the Peter Jackson trilogy photoshopped over the original Bakshi-film artwork?

You mean the master. The master can be manipulated and is the reason for a good or bad transfer. When you apply DNR, EE, etc. to the master, the transfer is going to look like crap no matter how high the bitrate is. Gangs of New York and Gladiator are perfect examples of this. WB should have done proper high resolution scans for LOTR with no DNR and such applied to the master.

I meant that we don't know whether the DNR's baked into the original film, or not. If it is, a high resolution scan (if they didn't already do that) isn't going to make things better.

The 3 films and the special features are in a 6 disc case and the 3 digital copies are in a standard 3 disc one.

It's not. However, it is/was that big when they first promoted the film with the poster art. It's like they were promoting Excalibur, or something.

What do you mean we don't know whether DNR is baked into the original film negative? Did you see the film in the theater? I'm taking a guess here that the likes of Ken Brown did see it in the theater, and the Blu-ray doesn't match up with what they remember.

It looks like the perspective of the picture is down low (from a hobbit's perspective?) with the tip of the sword being closer than Gandalf's head.

Total Film's review may as well not exist at all, it's frighteningly non-descript about anything tech wise and ultimately isn't very flattering. Boxset gets 3 stars, while the films themselves,(predictably enough), get 5 stars.

They don't even recommend buying them.

I am curious as to what the Warner Bros. quality control procedure is for putting out a title with the magnitude of importance of Lord of the Rings? Is there the equivalent of a "brewmaster" at a brewery who inspects and approves the transfer process at multiple QC points? Or is this just a relatively mindless and casual procedure? Who is accountable?
