Well I owned both on DVD and I always thought of the Theatrical Cuts as the definitive versions because that's what I saw in the theaters. Back when I saw these in theaters people didn't seem to leave the theater saying "If that was only a few hours longer". Peter Jackson's movies tend to be too dern long any way so I don't know why he always wants to extend them.

(Still,... I'll likely have both versions on Blu or maybe just the ridiculously long extended versions.)

No details are "confirmed" yet, we only have Peter Jackson's word on that. I think he's good on his word. What he also has stated is that it is not a duplicate release of the previous EE sets, it is an "ultimate edition" that will have some new editing and features. Taking that fact, it would be an absurd disaster if they did new editing but didn't do a remaster, it just wouldn't make any sense.
I highly doubt Warner is going to spend millions of dollars to remaster the entire EE trilogy. They "might" correct some very bad portions of the TE that will be included in the EE but that's all I would count on.

Remember, PJ gave his thumbs up for the release of the TE.
I hope he is there when they do the mastering for the EE and make sure those parts are done right but then we'll run into the issue were the TE parts may look subpar then when EE scenes kick in, they look spectacular kind of like Gladiator.

Maybe they plan a crap release of BOTH versions for now and then plan to offer up a good release in the future. Milk it like Star Wars type of thing.

Sounds very likely.

"kind of like Gladiator" pretty much sums it up.

Holy mostacholi the rating on Amazon is absolutely horrific. Classic.

There was a link to an interview with Jackson on the front page on here a few months back. He said something along the lines of: "They sent me the blu-ray and it looks terrific", which was an obvious giveaway he didn't supervise the transfer at all. However, if he thinks it looked "terrific" the question is....will the extended editions be the same way?

Default But isn't FotR the only one that needs a remaster?

I thought that TTT and RotK are being perceived to be okay as they are. So, hopefully it wouldn't need to take many millions of dollars, and would be financially feasible for the EE of Fellowship only to be redone.

I pre-ordered this from Best Buy (for in-store pickup) when it was $64.99. My pre-order price has not changed since the they lowered it to $59.99. Does Best Buy not do that and will I need to cancel this pre-order to get the lower price?

I'm waiting to see what Walmart does as it's open at 7am and in on the way to work. Otherwise it's BB at lunchtime for me.

Can't wait for this title.

Am I the only one hosting a LOTR blu-ray party on Tues, April 6th?

I've invited 4 friend to enjoy LOTR. We're getting pizza and watching FOTR (I warned them in an email it's not the best PQ of the 3).

HD picture and lossless sound! I only have a 42" screen so the issue with PQ should not be to bad.

Also, I have a new subwoofer (PA-120) that I can't wait to hear with LOTRs.

So anyone else hosting a party for this title?

I just might buy this. It all depends on other events that hopefully turn out favorably.

Dunno, WB seems to take awhile to re-release movies on blu-ray so you could be waiting a good while. I think there'll be a big reduction in price for the set before the individuals hit the market.

What time and where do you live?

I thought of having friends over but it is a three hour movie and we all need to get up pretty early in the morning.

The earliest I would guess is sometime next year. I think they'll want to push the boxset around the holidays.

My Walmart is 24 hour, so I will be there at midnight unless I find a better price somewhere else.

Hopefully whomever is working at that time is an employee in the know who can actually find it and sell it to you. I have been to a local Walmart when the store opens in the morning and have had problems with buying Tuesday releases.

They never put out Tuesday releases at my Wal-Mart before 7 AM unless it's a midnight release, kind of upsetting to me.
