Very True on the shelf space thing... Now I REALLY hope that packaging for the EE's are similar to the DVD versions... I LOVED the book style looking cases... if they don't mimic those, it will make me very sad indeed...

No they aren't.

If the 'average American worker' wants the extended versions, then he can wait for them. No one is forcing anyone to buy these.

The studios are not the embodiment of evil as some would make it seem

I'm not saying the quality would suffer by 10x (it would probably be somewhat less impressive overall, but fairly limited or possibly - though less likely - negligible), but the *complaints* and the blaming of video issues on putting both versions on the disc would increase 10x, IMO.

Seriously. The average American worker probably has higher priorities than double-dipping on a LOTR blu-ray.

I'd be curious to see that comparison to the blu-ray/HDTV.

Well, from reading the posts of the people who do not mind(notice) EE or DNR, a little compression won't hurt.

I just got back from my local Best Buy and they already had LOTR on the shelf. I doubt all chains are doing it but I'd thought I'd mention it here if anyone's interested in picking it up a few days early.

The discs in the current release are reportedly not full, so it seems there's room on them for more content.

One reason it was an issue with HD DVD.

Now that may be true.

Of course, getting Jackson to sign off on the EEs right now wouldn't happen anyway.

Official Custom Cover Art Group

I think you have to join the group to see the pictures. The picture gallery for that group has sample pics of these 3 custom covers that were created by thorthefifth on this site. He did take a while to get back to me when I PMed him to get the hi res downloads, so please be patient. I did a tiny bit of editing on them to get the "Lord of the Rings" text on the 3 spines to be in the same size and position like you see in my picture. You can try PMing him, but I don't know how strict he is being with who gets to access them.

Aside from a slight difference in color temperature, the BD and HDTV shots look identical in quality to my eyes.

ahhh... i c i c... I'm even willing to compensate those who have them... would NOT mind at all ordering a nice BD from Amazon or something, I have a list of about 10 different movies I'm looking to get custom covers for cuz I don't have the means or the know how to do it myself. I will check out the group tho... didn't know there was one. Thanks!

not even close. there's terrible dnr in the bd, look at his nose and face and you can see that there is absolutely no film grain whereas in the hdtv cap there is

I'm fine with saving space and I don't mind have multiple movies in one 'collection' case. My real issue is that I do not usually keep my digital copies, I sell them on ebay. The ones that I do actually redeem and keep for myself I don't store them inside the cases with the movie anyway. I usually just put those discs in a separate case away from my Blu-ray collection.

I just feel like for as expensive as these are they could have done something a little fancier for the cases. I really love the way those 3 custom cases look and that is where I am going to keep my discs at.

My local Best Buy had probably 20 sets out on the new release shelf. Did BB get to jump the gun?
