I agree, especially if you are at a close view distance which most people are NOT with TVs in the living room which is a big reason for my observations between my 46" at ~2.5-3 screen widths away compared to the bigger screen downstairs where I am much closer. The further the view distance, the harder it is to see flaws and details for most viewers.

Exactly. Not a good technical review in general IMO for either PQ or AQ. 1 sentence on the audio? Great review as far as the films themselves, poor A/V review.

Are we talking about personal preference regardless of directors intent, or directors intent? I thought we were talking about the latter, but if the former than of course people will have different preferences as far as seating. Your average viewer has no knowledge of directors intent as far as seating (or other areas) and does not care (which is obviously fine). A lot (not all) of HT and/or movie enthusiasts who are in the know as far as directors intent DO care and will make an effort to see it as close as possible to the directors intent.

Yeah people asked me how a huge LoTR fan like myself never really saw the trilogy on TV after I sold the DVDs. Two reasons - I hate commercials and they're not really the kind of movie you just start watching out of the blue.

The Elves wanted to involve Bombadil, including the possibility of giving him the Ring, since it had no power over him. Gandalf told them it would be a bad idea, because although they might persuade him to take it, he would be a poor guardian because he had no interest in the Ring, or in affairs outside of his small realm.

Much like Treebeard I guess, sure took a lot of prodding from the two Hobbits to get him to help destroy Isengard.

We don't know with precision who Tom is; at a minimum he is one of the Maiar, but not Iluvatar. Tolkien was intentionally vague about him, because Bombadil added an element of mystery to the story.

I'm quite overjoyed as Netflix is coming through for me with each and every movie being shipped to me! That's stage 1, now to get the time to watch them as we all full well know they aren't short in length.

To be honest though even if I liked the quality, the price just isn't right (at least not up to the last time I checked). This set will easily drop and probably much sooner than later.

I'd be shocked if someone hasn't said this (heck if I was going to read every post in this thread) but since when is a release folks had been dying for (well maybe not this version of the movies) and was delayed till now, NOT AS BAD AS SOME REVIEWS HAVE MADE IT OUT TO BE a good thing? I don't know about some but I wouldn't say 4.5 picture quality scores is an unreasonable desire and unattainable for these movies especially considering the wait and magnitude of these films.

I'm not reading that particular scoring from anyone so how are the negative reviews and opinions wrong?? That said, at this point I'll remain hopefully optimistic that I can view FOTR and enjoy it as it is the basis for my judgment of this release personally for a purchase.

From the books, it always seemed to me like Tom Bombadil and his mate were both a good deal bigger than most people. Oh and I'm pretty sure he even took the Ring from Frodo and wore it, kind of to prove it wouldn't effect him.

Treebeard was similar to Bombadil in that they were among the first creatures to inhabit Middle-earth. By comparison, Treebeard was easier to prod to action than Bombadil would be; it is hard to imagine what it would take to get him motivated to leave his realm and attack anyone.

I'm actually surprised how many people on these forums prefer the extended editions. I have seen both versions and I remember being in the theater during all of them and at no point did I say, "God, these films are amazing but they would have been better if they were a half hour to an hour longer."

My guess is that many of them were fans of the books, so the missing scenes were somewhat obvious.
I read the books at least three times and knew that some parts of the story were missing.

Probably something happening to Goldberry would get him quite stirred up I would think....

Default Big Wigs at New line/Universal taking notice

It looks like all this negative sentiment against this LOTR release and its studio is being carefully watch and followed by the big execs. Also, it seems that they've clamped down on a few of the popular message boards and forced some big time moderation. I know that Amazon was being forced to literally remove hundreds of posts in the last few days. I believe that the guys at Blu-ray here were forced to remove some info/posts also. The omission of the extended editions on this release has really turned nasty, the last thing they (the studio) was video quality being compromised. Honestly, i never had a problem with this relase being only the theatrical ones. My motto was always if you don't want them don't buy them. The a/v quality of the blu-ray is a different altogether story though and it sems that this too will turn ugly for the studio. Anyway, it seems that sales aren't going as expected and it's going to hurt them in the wallet. Maybe they should have thought of that before and spent a little more time/money trying to put out the best they could and on feedback from their customers. It's a shame they didn't to do neither properly and instead went for the fat profit margins. Later people and as always "buyer beware".
