Not true, just sit 12" from the screen.

shouldn't make a difference what you watch it on as long as it's HD 720 or
1080p, it's what you have. the question is did you like it and you can only base that answer on, what you have. hell, some people don't have a 40" !!

I'm waiting on your review. hopefully you'll be able to take a 1/2 hour look at each movie and report back. you should be able to give us something good by just don't that.

Glad I'm not the only one with that exact same analysis of the comparison.

Frankly I just don't understand how anybody could look at the HDTV version with all of its digital noise and artifacting, and still think that's better PQ than the Blu-ray version.

My copy is being sent fedex overnight. I didn't pay extra for that, but I will take it. I see the new price is $59.99. I just emailed them to make sure they refund the difference in price to me, as they charged me $63.99 today.

Looking forward to watching the movies.

I'll be watching them in full over the next couple days, but I'll be throwing on select scenes of TTT and RotK after I watch Fellowship to get a sense of what to expect

Edit: I finally saw a commercial for them on TV just now...the day before release.

I agree. Does FOTR really look like this?

I really think this shot has been manipulated because i think have seen this shot from the bluray on another site i can't remember and it certainly didn't look this bad

I know that Amazon was being forced to literally remove hundreds of posts in the last few days. I believe that the guys at Blu-ray here were forced to remove some info/posts also. The omission of the extended editions on this release has really turned nasty, the last thing they (the studio) was video quality being compromised. Honestly, i never had a problem with this relase being only the theatrical ones. My motto was always if you don't want them don't buy them. The a/v quality of the blu-ray is a different altogether story though and it sems that this too will turn ugly for the studio. Anyway, it seems that sales aren't going as expected and it's going to hurt them in the wallet. Maybe they should have thought of that before and spent a little more time/money trying to put out the best they could and on feedback from their customers. It's a shame they didn't to do neither properly and instead went for the fat profit margins. Later people and as always "buyer beware".
No offense but I find your post suspect. How can you make a claim of lower than expected sales before the movies are officially even out (they release tomorrow)? I'm pretty sure that the WB/NL execs are somewhat aware of what is going on in forums across the interwebs but they are more likely to care about the reviews. Although reviews have been mixed the concensus is that even though the PQ is flawed, it's still a "must own", "recommended" or "the best the trilogy has ever looked", which I'm sure they are happy about overall. Also what they care most about is that Joe Public will probably buy these, sight unseen, and be really happy. The masses know not what DNR is or even what the initials stand for and they are fine with that.

They don't look waxy to me on a 24" iMac monitor and I see grain artifacts as well. Then again after reading avs being told Dark City was completely rubbed free of grain and then watching it in motion it certainly does have grain it makes me wonder what people are using to check out screen grabs at times.

Er, the guy who posted the HDTV comparison at AVS even said that the majority of the movie is not DNRd
at any rate, those caps look mediocre at best for a 2001 film. soft and blurry.

+1 I have the set and i'll say it again the screencaps from eric.exe have to be manipulated. I have compared the movies to his caps and they look different.

Ok...

I just finished the part that most seem to think is the worst of the movie (the parts in Bilbo's house).

I didn't think it really looked nearly as bad as people are saying.

I'd say it is a decent 3.5/5 thus far into the movie.

Note: I'm not very sensitive to DNR and EE like some of you guys are, so if you are, you may think it is closer to a 3/5.

People exaggerate.

Detecting DNR doesn't necessarily equal zero grain or zero fine detail. DNR is an application of degree, there can be a lot, a little, too much, etc., and it serves a perfectly valid purpose.
'Dark City' and 'Pan's Labyrinth' are spectacular examples of people being full of crap. Yes, both titles have a noticeable degree of DNR, but if you say the PQ is "terrible", then you are full of baloney... I can see every hair in Jennifer Connelly's mustache in 'Dark City', just how much "fine detail" do I need? How much more should I expect from 1080p? Does a title have to be reference-grade to avoid being labeled as "terrible"? Based on what I'm reading in this thread and all the WB-hate threads, that seems to be the case, though it also looks like other studios are being cut a lot more slack.

What really concerns me, is that given enough pressure, what if home video producers actually cave to a loud minority, and start adding digital noise to BDs just because a bunch of blowhard ignorami think they are seeing film grain on HDTV, when they are really just seeing noise.
