Okay I have the set in my hands, but how do I get the cases out of the set, they seem to be so tight in there... For a second I thought about using a crowbar but luckily I decided against that.

PQ (distance/source: 14' from 70" XBR2):

Having seen the movies 10 times each in the theater, more times than I can count on DVD, and several times on HD broadcast, I can say without reservation that this is the best I have ever seen this section of the movie. I would not have even noticed the DNR and EE that have been the concern of so many posts these past few weeks. The colors are incredible and parts that appear soft appear that way intentionally. The "uneveness" that some people refer to seems to be a result of effects, such as when Bilbo walks completely around Gandalf in his house after the party. So far it is superb; I felt I could almost reach into the TV and grab Bilbo's red vest. I still haven't got to the part that has the line at the edge, but if this is indeed the worst, I would say cast any doubts you have aside.

SQ: Easily the best I have ever heard for this section, crystal clear and definitive. The sound quality is worth the purchase price alone.

Back to the film.

your review sounds better than any other post or review I've read so far-- you are viewing from a big screen and have seen the films multiple times--so the credibility factor here is strong. Looking forward to seeing these soon on my "little 52"" Sony!

Turn the case on its side. Holding it light in your hands, gently shake forward and the cases will slide forward for easier removal.

Back to the film.
I would encourage posts like the one above. Not because it is positive, but because it really offers something of value to this thread... a member's honest impression of the film (PQ, AQ, and a conclusion). I have read other similar reviews from the contributors here, and really enjoyed them. Everyone should consider adding their reviews of the LOTR Trilogy to the "User Review Section".

This is why those sets only allow you to change it in the service menu rather than the built in picture menu as other types of sets can do.

On those units there are the full amount of 1920 X 1080 pixels on the LCOS chip but when the image is projected in 1:1 a tiny handful of those corresponding on-screen pixels are not visible, purposefully. So really, it is mapping in 1:1 but you can't see a tiny amount of the outer extent because that's how the set was designed. I think if you changed the overscan settings for your type of set in the service menu you'd actually be telling it to project an image of slightly less than 1920 X 1080, so although you'd actually see the very tiny amount of image you can't see now you'd lose the true 1:1 image it is already projecting.

I think that’s how those sets work, so I’d not recommend changing it.
well i could write down the default settings, change it, and then i could always change it back to default settings manually
im a very curious person lol

I'd have to check but it's easy to see if there is no overscanning on the picture in the time frames below.

First time for only 2 seconds, second time for about 20.

Lines are very then, but seeing as it is a night scene, when the white one pops up it definitely catches your attention.

Yup, much like SW there are a few stand-out performances, there are some solid ones and then there's ones like Wood's and Bloom's.

I just called Amazon as well and they adjusted the price without any hassles. I also got an email earlier today (way before I called) saying I had a $4.00 Promotional credit towards the purchase of any Amazon video on demand(which I will never use) due to my order. The CSR was very nice and I was supposed to have the LOTR delivered today but as of 8:07pm I have not received them yet and have never received a package this late. The UPS status shows "in transit", I have amazon prime btw. The CSR called UPS for me and they told him that the movies will be delivered today.

Can wait to see these and judge for myself. Ha I'm also excited about the digital copies.

I wouldn't recommend it, especially if you have no service menu experience.

Like I said, it is already projecting 1:1, for you to change it would be to have it project slightly less than 1920X1080 so that you could see the extremely tiny amount of the image that is already being projected on the portion of your display that is obscured as part of its design, but again, making those changes that isn't the same as 1:1 mapping as it is on sets that user other types of technologies. RP sets purposefully project the image over the border of the visible portion of the display a tiny, tiny amount.

Its not that bad, the box itself is like the matrix box set, then theres the blu ray cases which are too jumbo cases like the tv show Fringe. Hope that helps.

The PQ complaints of Fellowship have nothing at all to do with it not being the EE.

Continuing to say it won't magically make it true.

I just got off the phone with customer service and she couldn't see that Amazon had briefly offered it for $59.99 today. I even had to read Amazon's own policy back to her, when she started with the "I am sorry sir but..." She couldn't refund my card but she did credit my account the $4.00 towards any future purchase. So, it works out the same. That is the first time I had an issue. Two different reps had the same "issue" computer wise.

Starting "The Two Towers" now. I am one happy camper.

There's about 2800 people on Amazon that will buy the EEs.
