If FOTR is a 4/5 video transfer, either my eyes or my TV is busted. How can anyone watch FOTR then TTT and give it around the same score?

Depends on your TV size and upconvert playabilities.

When I viewed FOTR blu-ray on my 52" Samsung using my BD35 as an upconverter, the PQ was only marginally better than the EE upconverted DVD.

So, if your TV is a decent 1080p, you have a good upconverter and want to watch watch the EE, I'd say go for it as you could probably score it for less than $20 instead of dropping $60 for a substandard blu-ray release.

Basically, the blu-ray won't looks good as say Transformers, POTC, The Dark Night or any of the reference PQ releases.

This trilogy blu-ray release is a mixed bag of PQ.

If you have a projector, get the blu-ray.
You could just rent them too and save a lot of cash.

Are there any links to the various exclusive packaging besides the steelbook i.e. the one with the sword, etc.?

Did you read Bigt's recent post about Warner paying attention to all the angry reaction to this release? Bigt also said they were clamping down on the negative reviews on Amazon. I asked where these "facts" were coming from, especially since I went to Amazon and no negative reviews had been deleted.

Sometimes I guess there just aren't enough words Ken, especially with all the clarifying and the explaining. Your input and opinion is certainly among the most valued. Thank you.

Depends on more than that.

Do you love the movies?

Have you read the books?

Do you find yourself wanting substantially more? (I believe each one has about 40 minutes extra, on average).

Do you have time for more?

If so, I'd rent the EEs and keep the BDs until you decide what YOU want most.

Keep the BLU-RAY. It's 10x better than the DVD. The first movie (FOTR) is still better than the DVD. And ROTK is outstanding... plus the sound is way better.

The DVD's look terrible.

All: Thanks for the advice.

I've decided to keep the blu-ray trilogy and retrieve the extended edition from Netflix. This will work for me, since I am not a special/bonus features/behind the scenes watcher.

I assume it is less, than Criterion used for restoration of either the La Grande Illusion and Gimme Shelter on DVD. But ok ... they're also big revenue movies, so the comparison is not fair.

Well I finally got to finish watching Return of the King.

I was VERY pleased with the transfer on this one.

Just like Fellowship, this one falls in between ratings for me. A 4.5 seems too low, but a 5.0 seems to high. So I'll give out another middle rating of 4.75/5. It looked fantastic for the vast majority of the movie to me, but not the entire time; that's what makes it not fit of a 5.0 imo.

The audio was very great again, but didn't manage unseat The Incredible Hulk as my favorite audio track in my collection.

The trilogy was very much worth the $51 I paid for it and I am pleased with my purchase.

And after seeing each film twice (extended/theatrical) in the last 8 days...it is time to move on to some shorter movies for a while!

Glad you liked them Diesel,i thought you would.

Now people have Lip sync problems !!!! this is usually your amp or reciever,as some do have a delay function to sort this out,i must admit i have not noticed this when i watched these, and lip sync is pretty easy to spot i do have a lip sync ajustment on my Blu-ray player but it was set to "Auto" so it was not being ajusted in any way.

I must admit that everytime i put these movies on to check things,i want to watch them again.

With the HD broadcasts over the weekend, and the release on Tuesday, this has definitely been burn-out week! I didn't watch the DVD's for comparison, though, and after being spoiled with the BD's, I will most likely never watch them again.

People who question how much I paid for these have no idea how much I'm going to watch them. Probably at least 2-3 times a year, even more than that this year.

That's a token gesture. Seeing it before release is hardly the same thing as having any control or involvement in the production. According to his comments, the extent of his involvement was being shown the master. Considering it's 9 hours of footage, "seeing" the master isn't scrutinizing the master, and he probably didn't even watch the whole thing.

He's said point blank that the blu-ray team did not work with him as they did on the DVD production.

Many people don't realize the bargain these represent. I paid more for the TE DVD versions of these movies than the BD's. And from a more extreme perspective, I have paid more for individual VHS movies than I did for the Lord of the Rings BD set.
