While most of the bantering was going on in this thread this evening, I rewatched The Two Towers. It was magnificent!

The improved sound is reason enough to buy the BD's over the DVD's. I was considering turning off one of my subs before I started TTT because I think my wife is getting tired of the house shaking, but I just couldn't bear to do it. I kind of feel sorry for the guys that keep hammering on what they feel is substandard PQ. They are missing the forest for the trees, and a truly great A/V entertainment experience.

It's unfortunate that it isn't the extended cuts of each film, but it's been so long since I've seen all three, that I might just have to buy it.

like nike Just Do it. You better hurry before the sale ends. 59.99 is cheap as hell for a trilogy of this magnitude. Catch it before it goes off sale, The retail price at best buy is 85 bucks.

Why do you want to do this?

(moan)... here:

DNR evens out images that are composed of "real" and "digital" elements.
It removes noise introduced by digital elements and processes.
It conceals a small amount of damage or corruption on the master, (not well, perhaps, but cheaply).
and finally, the big one:

after extensive market research, (i.e. test audiences being asked which picture looks better), they determined that most consumers prefer a little DNR. Mass market products cater to the majority. I'm sorry they don't cater to your personal tastes.
(haven't I already said this exact thing several times?)

I am now sending you a virtual Kick-in-the-head.

Now, go tell the others not to bring this up again.
extensive market research?, test audiences?. when did that happen and where?i never saw or heard anything like that before and after blu-ray hit the market.

Damn it, I'm completely powerless. After getting used to the BD format the past couple years, I haven't been compelled to watch the DVDs of these movies as compulsively as in the past. Now I've got these suckers in 1080p, and having already watched all 3 - here I am watching Fellowship all over again as I type this.

Damn you Peter Jackson for making such addictive films!

I'm hearing all kinds of cues that I don't remember from previous viewings, even at the theater. The musical soundtrack in particular is a revelation. Same thing with visuals. One small example:
[Show spoiler] When Haldir is dying on the wall at Helm's Deep and is looking at the other dead elves,
I KNOW I didn't see that kind of detail at the theater, and I can think of many other examples. Watching these BD's is like rediscovering the films again.

I was luck enough to get a used LOTR blu-ray from work and ended up only paying $38 for it. Not bad at all.

Before The Fifth Element was remastered, people on AVS were kvetching over the fact that it was "sharper and more detailed" in the HD broadcast (the usual suspects who are jumping on the LOTR releases). Then someone took a cap, sharpened it, and it was pretty much identical to the HD broadcast pic.

I'll bet dollars to donuts it's the exact situation here, Penton's disclaimer nonwithstanding.

Good steal bro.

BLU HEADS.

Instead of checking for small discrepancies in PQ lets see if there is a spell or subliminal message in these films that make me keep watching them. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Well, I'm not going to post my full impressions yet, I'm only about 2/3 the way through Fellowship, have had about 8 beers so it's not the best time to type out anything out in detail, and it'll likely be several days before I get the chance to watch them all through. Just got my lazy ass up to grab another beer.

That being said, obvious flaws in Fellowship that I thought would be there are there, but briefly and are not present throughout, they are however not nearly as bad as I thought they would be nor do they represent the majority of the hour and a half or so I have seen, A stark black-and-white improvement over the DVD presentation beyond a shodow of a doubt, audio is great. If the following 2 films are an improvement on this presentation (and every single thing I've read leads me to believe that is the case) then this one to my eyes looks above average as big titles go, nothing spectacular but not hardly Patton (those who have seen this will be able to use that as a reference point, it is not in any way in that league of "ugh." DNR in this is simply not anywhere in that same category.) sO far, not spectacular but also not terrible, a little above average I'd say.

GOing back to watch the rest now. Will probably be too busy during the week to watch the following two but hopefully during the weeked there'll be time. Later. Will post again once I've seen em all.

Did you look at them? There's nothing to suggest it to be the case
if anything, the BD seems sharpened in a handful of shots:

http://img530.imageshack.us/img530/1893/lotr5tv.png
though for the most part they're toe to toe in acuity.

How the hell did Tolkien write all this crap?
When I was a youngster, I had a really great encyclopedic resource on all of these details:

It was called 'The Tolkien Companion', written by J.E.A. Tyler.
According to Amazon.com, that book was revised and updated in 2004, so it may be even better now. It's 730 pages, it's in-stock, and it's only $3...

... I think I may have to put in an order to replace my lost copy, right now.

From Book V, Chapter VI - The Battle of the Pelennor Fields:

"Eowyn, Eowyn!' he cried at last. "Eowyn, how come you here? What madness or devilry is this? Death, death, death! Death take us all!"

Then without taking counsel or waiting for the approach of the men of the City, he spurred headlong back to the front of the great host, and blew a horn, and cried aloud for the onset. Over the field rang his clear voice calling: "Death! Ride, ride to ruin and the world's ending!"

And with that the host began to move. But the Rohirrim sang no more. 'Death' they cried with one voice loud and terrible, and gathering speed like a great tide their battle swept about their fallen king and passed, roaring away southwards.

Thanks, I guess it makes a little more sense in the novel than it did in the film.
