I won't go into a long drawn out review like I did for FOTR because if you read that review, you know how I feel about these films and how I thought FOTR looked pretty darn good. Well TTT was nearly flawless in my book. The colors were rich. Details on the Hobbits cloaks popped out. Gollum and Treebeard showed no signs of outdated CGI and if fact looked unbelievable. I couldn't be happier with how those 2 characters transfered over to HD.

Now let me get to certain scenes. Let me talk about Fangorn Forest first. The moss on the trees was lush, the greens were accurate and the detail allowed you to tell that the forrest was intended to be very very old. I can't imagine it looking much better than it did.

Now on to the battle sequesnces. Each sequence was crisp and detailed. The night battle scenes had very nice black levels and the detail in the creatures (Orcs/Wolves) was very nice indeed.

Once again the audio is top notch. It knocked my socks off on a few occasions, and like I said in my FOTR review, all 7 channels were active for the whole movie.

To wrap up i'll say that I was awe struck on how TTT looked. You see stuff that no way you would have seen on the dvd. For example individual hairs/fibers popping up from the Hobbitses cloaks and individual veins in certain characters eyes. I am so happy that we finally have these movies on Blu-ray and to be able to own them and watch whenever I want is a true blessing.

Couldn't agree more. In my opinion the bashing on this set seems like a damn conspiracy because it is nowhere the bad quality Gladiator had. And TTT is a 4 star PQ in everyway and ROTK is almost reference. Yes these films is that good on a 50 inch TV. Where i watched them on

I finished TTT yesterday

A big step up in my opinion, very pleased although they're still a few minor problems but easily forgotten, as the story is fricking great!

I forget how the movies are perfect and wonderful, as I said earlier it's been 2 years or more since I last saw them.

I think I agree with Ken's PQ rating, right between 3.75 & 4 out 5.

42 inch plasma, sitting about 5 feet away.

A question here, does the human race have an afterlife in the Middle Earth universe?

That is a meritless observation that could literally be applied to any blu-ray.

Here's something that IS a fact: the three movies were shot simultaneously on the same format. The "source" is identical if you go back far enough.

PS: Those of you waiting for the price to drop...well I've been waiting on the Bourne trilogy set and the price never seems to drop below $59.99 and is usually much higher...even after the "flipper" disc single issues came out, which I can buy together cheaper than the box.

I don't know how long you've been purchasing blu rays but it very common when i movie comes out, that the first week is slightly cheaper than its retail value. After the sale week the movie goes to is original price.
Lord of the Rings was 59.99 everywhere when it came out, now its 65 on amazon. 84 at best buy, and 70 at walmart. All of these stores started off at 59.99.

Yeah, the AQ is completely overlooked. PQ is only half the HD experience!

I don't think so. Not sure but I thought I read that penton-man and digital bits said FOTR was from a different source. again not sure. Jeff Or Penton man can you please help on this matter.

From what I could gather what Penton and what others have said,
the only diffrence is the post production (DI), unless I missed anything.

Agreed. I had to switch off the sub because it was getting late, very impressive. Played a major role in my decision to order...

I find it a little disturbing the general consenus="good enough." Imagine if The Matrix was released with a 3.0 PQ (a generous score for FOTR). Yes The Matrix cost upwards of $100-$125...LOTR=$50-$65.

i haven't seen ROTK yet, I hear it's a significant upgrade from the previous two, but FOTR is a 3.0 only because some scenes are well done, while others (Rivendell) are horrid! TT is an improvement, but again only a 4.0 at best IMO because it's still relatively soft.

The AQ is outstanding I will say! I bought the Trilogy because I lost my previous versions on DVD through various moves throughout my life. I will say i'm satisfied with the trilogy, but certainly not demo material, and that is a disappointment.

I remember them saying they shot the movie simultaneously also. During the commentary on FOTR, Peter said it was weird shooting the scene in FOTR at Minas Tirith when Gandhalf was going through all the books because he had been doing most of his Gandhalf the White scenes for awhile.

Yeah, the source FILM. Super35.

Meanwhile it was shot over a multiyear period, with the postproduction evolving on each. Not to mention the director and crew themselves getting better with each film, refining their techniques.

So saying it was shot as "one big movie" is simplistic at best.

In the movie, one of Sam's quotes in Moria occurred in the book after Gandalf blasted a pack of wolves. Sam: "That was an eye-opener and no mistake! Nearly singed the hair off of my head!"
This is a good thing.
In so doing, they were able to keep little bits from the book where they didn't have time to include the whole scene, but at least were able to make a reference to them in the movie.
