That part looked so fake in the movie.

Apparently not in this thread however as the tone has become rude in here.
That might qualify more as "attention craving".

And no, I dont have an exact to the second screenshot comparison that can be compared and critiqued endlessly. Nor do I have the time or inclination to spend on it. IT WAS AN IMPRESSION. A feeling I had when I watched them. NOT A FREAKIN TECHNICAL ANALYSIS, like most of this thread has become.
And yes, while it may have been "extreme" to some, it's overall purpose which is a sentiment that numerous people in this thread have shared, the BRD Transfer of FOTR is UNDERWHELMING for such a big BRD release.

I think some people just want to understand your impression, since not many people have stated that the BDs are inferior to the DVDs.

Was it an overall impression? Was it an impression of a few scenes? Have you watched the DVDs and BDs on the same TV, BD player, etc.?

These sorts of questions help us understand your point.

Again, I tried to clarify that my first post was misunderstood and I could have edited but didnt feel like it.

I did not intend to state the DVD was better. I was meaning to focus on the fact that I was more impressed with the HD TNT presentation the first time I saw it a year or so ago versus my first viewing of the BRD.

And, my TV is a 61in Smasung DLP from 2007. I watch at apporx 10 ft back. I just replaced the lamp in February. (great usage hours on that- over 10k I estimate). I watch on a PS3 using HDMI to my Onkyo and HDMI out to the TV.

Personally, I didn't find the picture quality on Fellowship of the Ring THAT bad. It needs a bit of work but it's much, much better than upconverted DVD image.

My problem with it was the fact that I didn't realize how much I missed certain extended sequences that aren't in these theatrical cuts.

I still contend that The Two Towers and Return of the King suffer in both versions but if I had to pick one NOW after viewing Fellowship theatrical (first time since 2002), I'll take the extended cuts...for better or worse.

The tone in here has drifted into somewhat hostile territory (especially over the last two or three dozen pages). I don't think anyone is saying the release shouldn't or can't be enjoyed, just that they're personally distracted by some of the problems. Each person's viewing is subjective, as is yours. Your opinion may be in the majority, but it shouldn't be used to belittle another person's impressions anymore than theirs should be used to belittle yours.

Just to repeat myself ad nauseum, I felt 'FotR's transfer could be better, but I also think its flaws shouldn't prevent anyone from buying and enjoying this release. Suffice to say, not everyone has to devote themselves to one camp or the other.

Judging PQ and AQ isn't an exact science, and there is no absolute right and wrong answer in the debate (at least not with the facts anyone has on hand). I'll be viewing an original theatrical print of 'FotR' in two weeks, and I'll report back my findings then (and even update my review, if necessary).

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this ongoing discussion, but try and keep it civil, gentlemen. It's getting a bit unruly here and there

Ah, gotcha. I used to be impressed with the HD broadcasts, as well. Then I did a side-by-side comparison of various scenes with my BDs.

I don't think I'll ever go back to watching the HD broadcasts again.

I watched FOTR this past weekend on a 92" screen, with a 720p projector. I agree with those that it had a tendency to be soft in certain scenes, whether that was intended or not didn't bother me, as i got lost in the story. I still saw much improved detail in a lot of scenes. My opinion is just like Ken states, it is still a great movie that should be enjoyed.

I will note that the audio was great. It had a terrific dynamic range and depth that really further enhanced the pleasure of watching these movies. Dialog was very clear and was not lost in any of the loud, demanding scenes. Low frequency extension was tight and didn't overwhelm the imaging from the front speakers. Surround use was quite noticeable and really encompassing in those scenes that provided a lot of ambient noises. IMO, the audio really is the triumph for this particular movie.
