I watched Return of the King last night again when some relatives came over to our house. Where the first viewing was mostly to appreciate the release on BD, I was able to focus a little more the second time, and starting picking out details I have never noticed before; this was also true with the sound. As far as the TE version is concerned, I don't know how this film could look and sound much better.

Not always. I've read several blu-ray reviews where people say something like "I'm so glad I avoided watching my DVD of this movie for the last 2 or 3 years hoping that it would eventually come out on Blu-Ray."

The 35mm prints for this movie have always been sub-optimal and won't really represent how good it *could* look on home video (given some investment of time/money). Before digital intermediates, super35 had a reputation for being an inferior format since making anamorphic prints involved an additional lab step where the image had to be optically squeezed, which degrades quality (compounded with the additional graininess due to the smaller negative), and that's just for regular movies. When you add in the fact that most of the movie WAS scanned into digital, then printed back onto film and cut in with the normal negative, you're getting a relatively low quality print due to all the generation loss involved.
lol, the sub-optimal 35mm prints look better then the blu rays. So what does that say about the blu's. (ps: I haven't seen the third film on blu yet, but both the first and second are dissapointing when compared to the 35mm scrennings I have seen recently).

ps: I still bought these blus and do enjoy them, i'm only dissapointed with the vq on the first film and don't really care for special features so the lack of them doesn't bother me.

That's fine. I guess I'm just saying that if I'm in the mood to watch a movie I have on DVD, and I have no idea when or if it's coming out on Blu-Ray, then I watch the DVD. If I know it's coming out on Blu-Ray within a few months, then I might wait.

Sons of Gondor, of Rohan. My brothers. I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me! A day may come, when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of Fellowship, but it is not this day! An hour of wolves and shattered shields when the age of men comes crashing down! But it is not this day! This day we fight! By all that you hold dear on this good earth, I bid you, stand, Men of the West!

Still doesn't get me pumped up and obviously it didn't pump them up either, considering they almost lost that battle.

I've officially watche dthem all and yes the FotR has it's flaws and is not as good as the others. but if you were wanting to buy this to begin i say pull the trigger becuase it's not that bad of PQ and you will stop noticing it after frodo gets the ring because you'll be too swept in the story.

Yeah I know, Theoden mentions it before the battle starts.
This is a fight we cannot win.
We shall meet them in battle nonetheless.

I just don't like Aragorn's speech.

Not trying to fight anybody, dude. Just disagreeing with you, you can disagree with someone without fighting them. I wish they had given Elrond a cool speech but I guess since he never entered the field of battle, that wasn't really possible.

True i like that dude, he had the one battle scene in the beginning but that was it. i guess he was too cool to fight again. BTW i wonder how rich is he, he starred in LOTRs and The Matrix Trilogy, He's probably sitting on some nice cash being that he was never a main character.

Hugo Weaving was also V but I would argue he was a main character in the Matrix trilogy, at least films 2 and 3.

Hugo Weaving has been part of so many gigantic blockbusters in the last dozen years, it's ridiculous... remember, he was also Megatron.

I was trying to remember where I had seen Denethor (John Noble) in ROTK before.

It finally came to me. He's the nutty professor in FRINGE.
