I do like the politics of Tolkien, which is far more subtle than for example CS Lewis. But the unmistakable references to an evil in the east and the good men of the west tie into Tolkien's view of the real world.

The absolute master of creating a world teaming with political intrigue was Frank Herbert in Dune. Hopefully we will see a decent version of that book brought to film one day. Del Toro?

wonder what sort of improvement these "new HD masters" are supposed to entail

Hey Grand Bob-
I heard a guy on Coast to Coast A.M. saying that Tolkien had access to some crazy library and based the elves from LOTR on some old mythology that claims the aryans are actually from Mars or some moon of Saturn and mated with neanderthal man to create us. They are supposedly tall, skinny, extremely pale, blond hair, etc. and are trying to get back to their paradise (mars).
It was a crazy show even for Art Bell.

I hope they have seen the widespread dissatisfaction with the FoTR BR and take that into account for any future releases (Like the EEs for instance).

That's kind of what I meant when I said that LOTR doesn't read like fantasy. It reads like history.

That's saying a lot.

My son just told me today that a movie may be made about this book. I never heard of this before now. A fantasy book about C.S. Lewis and Tolkien:

Let's get away from that off-topic crap and share some new impressions of the movies -
I'm far more attracted to Miranda Otto than I used to be
I now think Sam was the main Hobbit
I like Theoden more than Aragorn
I don't like Bilbo that much but I think the 2 Hobbit films will fix that
Not sure any more if I still like Boromir more than Eomer.

Yeah Eowyn is awesome.
Samwise rules. Best hobbit ever.
Theoden was badass especially during his speech in ROTK.
I still think movie Bilbo(Ian Holm) > Frodo (Elijah wood)
Boromir > Faramir > Eomer

The disc producers or the fans?

Seems to me it's those dissatisfied aren't aware of how they are intended to look. Seems to me the EEs will look pretty much the same.

I doubt they were "intended" to look soft, though it was a byproduct of the process. In fact, I have seen an article where the cinematographer expresses his dissatisfaction:

"While the extensive effects sequences on Fellowship had been mastered digitally, the entire movie was not. Lesnie says the process has improved sufficiently in the last year to make it logistically feasible to digitally master all of Two Towers, leading to, according to Lesnie, “a sharper look and finer grain.”
“This time, the whole thing is mastered digitally, and that means we avoided the generation loss that we saw when we made over 2,000 release prints of the first film,” he says. “We were a little disappointed by the generation loss in some of those prints. We discovered that if you digitally grade the entire film 100%, doing the squeeze of the super 35mm images digitally, rather than optically, the result is less degradation of the image in your release prints. We did extensive tests and eventually figured out this was the best way to go.”

Good Job guys keep voting. The dudes that don't like this movie are trying super hard to bring the ratings down. They even brought down the thread rating to 3 stars. Anyway keep voting.

Not really much else in the article on that topic, mostly it's about the different approach to shooting the second movie.

What a fantastic article. I sense at least two more releases in TLoR future. I bet they'll release the EE on blu around the Hobbit just like everyone knows is inevitable, and then they'll likely release a complete history collection with everything (and I mean everything that Michael Pellerin was talking about!) TLoR related altogether and who knows when that will come out and what new HV medium it will be released on in the future.

What I thought was even more interesting was the bit about the EX encoded mix for Fellowship and how it was non-existent and inconsistent with the other 2 films. WOW!! I wasn't an audiophile back then like I am now, but I would've imagined others being pissed about this! That was quite an informational nugget Pellerin gave us.

It really helps put things into perspective about what had to be done.

Thanks for the article Yorkee!

Not sure what part of the movie this comes from, maybe Two Towers when Gollum takes 'em to the Black Gate or maybe Minus Morgul in ROTK? Not sure what you're asking about Frodo's face, it just looks dirty is all.
