The personalities, as Tolkien defined them, were part of the charm of the story. Both Bakshi and Jackson rewrote the story. I'm not talking about leaving out Bombadil or the scouring of the Shire, either.
You're never going to get a 100% faithful adaptation of LOTR that isn't a 20 hour mini-series, and even then, audiences might hate it.

Books aren't movies, and movies aren't books. Things have to be changed to fit to the cinematic format. I know that doesn't count when talking about character, but you must also know that this is Jackson, Walsh, and Boyens' interpretation of Tolkien's work, and I for one think they got the spirit of the work right. I don't mind that Aragorn isn't running around with a broken Narsil or ready to claim his throne as soon as they leave Rivendell. I also don't care about other changes such as Faramir, because at the end of the day, those changes made for a better cinematic product.

Going back to that article you linked to: I think her most egregious complaint is how "Two Towers" and "Return of the King" were not structured like they were in the book. Isn't it just basic knowledge that books and movies can be structured very differently? It's hard to take her criticisms seriously when she obviously doesn't understand basic differences between print narratives and cinematic narratives.

Off topic crap? Honestly, i think the possibility that the people, races, creatures, and characters of Middle Earth are actually based on "real" history or myths from here on our world might actually further a more interesting discussion than which character we think is the coolest.

I'm was initially waiting for the EE, but honestly that is like a good two years away, plus the theatrical versions are still great in fact ROtK won an oscer, not for the EE but for the version we got in theatres, so anyone wishing to own all best picture movies should be interested in owning this set

I was originally at 30/70 in favour of not getting it but now i'm at a good 50/50 about whether to purchase this set, is it worth it?

The DTS-MA tracks are worth the purchase alone.

It might not have been like the novel (haven't read it, so I can't comment on that) but if you think there's no story in Starship Troopers then you really need to watch it again.

I agree with almost all of what you said with the exception of the Scouring of the Shire. At the time the movies were made, I have no doubt that it was the right decision to excise, but I think they had no idea how much money these movies would go on to make. I think had they known how successful they were going to be, they might have had a truncated version with Sauruman getting the shaft so to speak.
