It's been many years since I've read The Hobbit but I believe Bilbo either steals it or finds it misplaced in Gollum's cave residence.

Ash nazg durbatulûk, ash nazg gimbatul,
Ash nazg thrakatulûk agh burzum-ishi krimpatul

The ring had the ability to change size. As well as adapting to fingers of varying size, from Sauron's to Frodo's, it sometimes suddenly expanded in order to give its wearer the slip (Wikipedia)

Hmmmm. Sounds like a condom.

What did Tolkien achieve by having Gollum inadvertently complete the Quest?
Probably something to the effect of "the Lord works in mysterious ways".

Yes, Gollum misplaced the ring somewhere in the cave and When Bilbo entered the cave, he accidentally found the ring and without thinking he put the ring in his pocket. IMO Riddles in the Dark is the best chapter in the hobbit.

Radagast was Aiwendil ("friend of birds"). Does that mean that he and Stormcrow were good buddies?

Gandalf bleaches.

I do what? All Stormcrow really means is that I'm a frequent bearer of bad news, that's all.

Since you've been around for 2000 years you have been known by many names:

"Gandalf dwells in different parts of Middle-earth. And many are his names in many countries. The elves call him Mithrandir, the dwarves – Tharkun, the haradrims – Incanus. It is hobbits and the Rangers of the North who called him Gandalf. He has a number of nicknames: Gandalf Greyhame, StormCrow, the White Rider, the Grey Wanderer and the Grey Fool. Most likely that by the latter he was “christened” by his ill-wishers as Gandalf is wisdom itself. Like Frodo, he is Tolkien’s favourite personage."

Somewhere, along the way, you lost your hat. The last time I saw it it was at Hogwarts sorting students.

I doubt that's my hat, I'm pretty sure my hat was destroyed when that Balrog of Morgoth battled me to the death. Not sure why I never got a white one, though.

Just his obsession used as a means to an end I guess...

Yes, he used to use ring for killing orcs then he ate them() whenever they came into gollum's cave.

And about that able to avoid Sauron for over 500 years question.

Sauron didn't know what happened to the ring after Isildur kicked his ass. He thought some elves/wizards destroyed it with their power. But he soon found out that his ring has been found when gollum himself came to the mordor. He was kidnapped and tortured by Sauron himself. He told baggins in shire had the ring.

Grand Bob can explain better.

And sorry, my English is pretty bad.

.
Isildur did not kick his ass, Gil Galad and Elendil kicked his ass, and then Isildur just stepped in last second after he was worn down from the fight with Elendil and Gil-Galad.

Gollum always put the ring on. When he first found it, he used it for thieving and deception. His fellow river folk discovered this then threw him out and that's when he went to live in the Misty Mountains. After that he routinely used it to hunt for goblins. When he lost it, he simply misplaced it. Bilbo finds it on the tunnel floor.

He was able to elude Sauron because Sauron wasn't looking for the ring, I believe. He was preoccupied with making a return.

Hey I had a strange occurence. I saw Kick-Ass last night (trust me this has to do with LOTR) and noticed a horrendous amount of DNR and EE on the actual print. It was terrible faces were waxy and I could see that overdefined line thing you get with EE. So back to LOTR, maybe FOTR actually did have that much DNR on the actual negative itself. I wouldn't be surprised because I do remember it looking very soft theatrically when I ran the print and I focused it so it was in focus as much as it could be. If that's the case then there are probably going to be a lot of films that come out with varying degrees of DNR that was actually applied during the production of the film and not afterwords. Possibly even...Star Wars Dare I say it. The redo's were all finished in a digital realm and they had to be processed so that the old effects would match the cleaner new effects. I hope I am wrong but we could be in for another LOTR Trilogy with the original Star Wars films. Sorry to frighten folks but I figured I'd just throw in my 2 cents on the issue.

You can't DNR in-camera
Previous HD versions of this film didn't have DNR in those scenes, it was just done for the blu-ray.

NEWS FLASH

Gollum's recipe for ORC recovered in Australia:

http://www.foxnews.com/world/2010/04...est=latestnews

The cookbook has become a collector's item. Hmmm. Where can I find some ORC meat? Tried Trader Joe's. No luck.
