If Grand Bob doesn't mind, why does Boromir have the Horn of Gondor and not Aragorn?

It was handed down from father to eldest son by the Stewards of Gondor, in the days when there was no king. The Great Horn of Gondor was made from the horn of a kine (wild ox) that had been hunted near the Sea of Rhun by Vorondil, a Steward of Gondor. Therefore the horn was a token of authority for the stewards, as the Sceptre of Annuminas was for the kings. Aragorn was not the heir of the stewards, but the heir of the kings.

Actually, this whole sequence is my favorite.
Truly epic!

Boromir was thought to be the next in line to be king, they didn't know Aragorn was the heir of Isildur and thus the rightful heir to the throne.

My favorite lines were in the narration which was taken right from Tolkien.

"But they were, all of them, deceived, for another Ring was made."

Bean's delivery was impeccable. First time I saw the movie, I had other things on my mind, so I didn't really have a vested interest in the story or the characters. Just went to get my mind off of things (didn't work.) When I saw it the second time, when it came out on DVD....it gave me chills and honestly, I got a little teary eyed. Powerful, powerful line.

Sean Bean is very good. I liked him in Patriot Games and Ronin--well, his characters tend to not be likeable, but his acting is great.

Sorry, but it might be an setup issue in your case. Perhaps you would enlighten me. What equipment are you using?

I'll accept the info from the source. i.e. DTS. Just take a second and click on this link and read the short description of DTS-HD MA and beneath it DTS-HD MA Essentials. You will see that they only drop DTS Neo 6 from Blu-ray. The other formats are dropped from DVD, not from Blu-Ray

http://www.dts.com/DTS_Audio_Formats.../Overview.aspx

It might also help if you looked through the PDF of the white paper which has some good graphical representations of the speaker remapping process and the block diagrams of the functionality of the player and AVR given the use of standard or high speed HDMI cable interconnect. It clearly shows the difference in processing when the decoder in the player is used or when the decoder in the AVR is used.

After all, the DTS Suite of tools was used in the studio. Who else can you believe.

If I use the DTS-HD MA decoder in my PS3 I get DTS-HD MA 6.1 with a variable bit rate. My receiver does not have a DTS-HD MA decoder in it, so if I set the PS3 to Bitstream instead of LPCM, my receiver decodes the lossy DTS ES 5.1 format with a fixed bitrate of 1.5 Mbps.

If you would like to read about the encoding process used, this is a good source:

Essentials has nothing to do with encoding.

It's decoding. And my $2500 preamp & Oppo BD83 are set up correctly, believe me.

PeterTHX. Of course it does. They can drop core formats during the encoding process using the DTS Suite in the studio. With BD, they drop Neo 6 only. An issue with your player has been reported elsewhere:

http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=123377

Your player has the option of either bitstreaming DTS-HD MA or decoding onboard. In your downstream equipment do you have a DTS-HD MA decoder or are you just using High speed HDMI cable to your amp? In other words do you have an option of hooking up an AVR with a DTS-HD MA decoder?

Aha. This clears it up. The 'Essentials' move was driven by the maufacturers trying to avoid the licensing costs of little used codecs. Introducing 'Essentials' actually is costing DTS in lost licensing fees. They are not the bad guy.

http://www.hometheatermag.com/news/012109dtsessential/

Here is the DTS press release about Essentials from 2008. It seems pretty clear to me.

I do this stuff for a living, a very long time now.

Believe me when I tell you the "DTS Essentials" that I'm talking about has nothing to do with encoding the disc itself.

It's not a player issue either, most BD players that decode DTS-MA internally are of the "Essentials" type.

If you have a DTS Essentials decoder you will not get DTS 5.1 ES (6.1), simple as that. This wouldn't be the first time where the language of the DTS website was obtuse.

Did you read the info in the link from my previous post regarding the Oppo problem? Any comments?

The decoder in my AVR does decode DTS- ES Discrete and Matrix when playing LOTR BDs or Xmen The Last Stand, respectively, so that lends credibility to your statement that 'Essentials' applies to the decoder rather than the encoder. I thought the objective was to save digital space (in the differential stream) during the encoding process by dropping rarely used formats.

Do you have any thoughts about the speaker remapping feature of DTS-HD MA? I'm getting the feeling that you are not a fan of DTS.

Sean Bean, I wish he had been cast in a different role so we could've had his excellence in all 3 films.

Some of my favorite lines of boromir from fotr:

"One does not simply walk into Mordor."

"Gondor has no king, Gondor needs no king"

"It is a strange fate that we should suffer so much fear and doubt over so small a thing. Such a little thing. " (This was also in book)

I always cry after watching the
[Show spoiler]death of boromir.
