Why not include the Theatrical versions and Extended Editions in a same blu-ray disc or 2 disc theatrical and extended versions and don't include to much special features as long as they include the movie trailers for both editions I will be fine with it.

Exactly no excuse with the amount a Blu disc can hold not to have it all in one release, it's nothing but greed and makes me so angry!!!!

The worst thing that could happen is if after the theatrical and extended Blu-ray releases, New Line releases a combination extended/theatrical set. Wait, that's exactly what happened with the DVDs.

Default Upconverted DVD looks horrible

Holy cow... Last night I watched The Two Towers on DVD, upconverted on my Samsung 1080 w/ my Panasonic DMP-35, which normally is a recipe for a heck of an unpconversion, but NOT last night. It looked atrocious. Maybe I've just gotten way too spoiled on Blu movies; not sure.

Has anyone else noticed this? Could it mean anything for the eventual Blu release?

By the way, in the exterior/night shots, where there are lots of dark blues, etc, whenever there was fast action on the screen, there were flashes of red all around the edges. It was really impossible to not notice... Even my wife said: "What the heck is all that red flashing?" (She also noticed the extremely poor picture, which is saying a lot.)

i think it will be released in the US the same time aswell

Also i have no clue why anyone want TROTK on 2 discs. If King Kong 200 min + a 90 PiP track can be on 1 disc with awesome PQ/AQ. This can certainly also be on 1 disc only

What DVD release did you watch? I think the extended versions look and sound better.

Well I got the extended edition and it does upconvert ok, not sure how bad it was with your copy but I will say that even the extended edition does not see to upgrade as good as other movies I saw on DVD. In many scenes I find the background to be almost foggy

because jackson is saving the directors cuts when the hobbit comes out.
like lucus he must have some control over the films.
you can't blame the studio's all the time.
btw you can debate this all you want, your not going to see directors cuts till 2011.that was said by jackson late last year.

No sir I think you are misstaken...

The only PJ statement regarding LotR on blu-rays, in 2008, is this:

"icaroz: Will the Ring trilogy get a blu-ray release around the time of Hobbit? or sooner?

Peter_Jackson: Hi Icaroz - We are working on a blu ray version of the LOTR trilogy with Warner Bros at the moment, not sure when it is due for release. It certainly won't be this year."

Just FYI, that article was from May 24, 2008, so a LotR release this year in some aspect is highly probable.

I know and I agree.
I was just clearing up what PJ had said contr. what he have not said in 2008. He did not, ever, mention that the EE's was going to be released at the same time as The Hobbit, that is a recent rumour.

Yeah, I seriously doubt it'll take two years after the theatrical versions hit Blu for the extended versions to come out.

I enter the loop of the thread, just to follow up the latest news on the topic... I would like so much the Blu-ray to be released, that's definitly a big mistake to not have this trilogy out, it would be a fantastic demo for the blu-ray tech

I noticed that you can't even but 1 and 3 on DVD from Amazon anymore (unless you use a third party). The tide is pulling back.

From today's Digital Bits Rumor Mill.........

3/16/09

Here's some news that you Lord of the Rings fans have been waiting for. Word from a couple of readers is that select FYE stores had signs up last week revealing that Warner Home Video will be releasing New Line's Lord of the Rings Trilogy on Blu-ray Disc in December. Some stores may even have begun taking preorders. This includes all three films. The titles are not yet listed on the company's website, but our industry sources have informed us that the studio's current plans do indeed call for all three films, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King, to be released on Blu-ray in early December on Blu-ray in their original theatrical versions. There will likely be little in the way of extras, as both the extended versions and the special edition material are being held by director Peter Jackson for use in a future "ultimate edition" BD box set, planned for release when the two Hobbit films arrive in theatres and on DVD and Blu-ray starting in 2012. As you know, Warner alluded to the Rings films arriving on Blu-ray in 2009 late last year, in promotional inserts included with some of their recent BD titles. Let's hope they aren't overly DNR-ed. (That's a little message for you guys doing the digital mastering for Warner/New Line HD titles, in case you did realize it. On behalf of Blu-ray fans everywhere, PLEASE get the message and dial back the Digital Noise Reduction knob!) Thanks to Bits reader Dan R. and others for the heads-up.

I for one will not buy the theatrical only versions
