I received my copy of LoTR on Blu from Ebay. Can't wait to watch them. It turns out that Fry's in-store price has dropped to $49.99.

What I am trying to explain is that, while I love the extended edition of the LOTR Trilogy, and I bask in their trove of additional features, for me, skipping the original theatrical cut was never an option. I want BOTH, the theatrical and the extended, for different reasons.

My point here is that I was not one of those on the fence about this release, wondering whether to get this to satisfy my LOTR immediate cravings, or to avoid it and wait for the foreseeable boxset, the one that Michael Pellerin and even Peter Jackson have mentioned some times.

So I was more than willing to buy this set now, and then, whatever pumped-up mega boxset they throw us later in the future.

But then, I started reading about the PQ issues... And while I am as demanding as the next guy, I am also quite aware that there's always a lot of noise in the Net, and a lot of people who just want to show you that they are more discerning than the rest of us. So I tried to be sensible about it, and just wait and see, and try to form my own judgement.

And then, the first screen captures started to show up, and… well, it was certainly discouraging, but I told myself to remember that still images NEVER tell the whole story about quality transfer, at least, not the way that the image in motion do. Many apparent artifacts will be not so apparent when you actually get to watch the movie on your display of choice. And, of course, there's also the matter of how those still images were captured and compressed, and how much that can be a factor in their quality, too.

So, I tried to remain positive.

And then… Then I happened upon these:

http://comparescreenshots.slicx.com/comparison/43821
http://comparescreenshots.slicx.com/comparison/43820
http://comparescreenshots.slicx.com/comparison/43823

Well, if any of you can not clearly see the difference there, if you can not appreciate the healthy, detailed grain of the HD broadcasting, versus the blurry, waxed look that is typical of poorly aplied, unprofessional noise reduction…

Just let's say that, sorry, but your eyes are clearly not trained enough.

The image quality of LOTR: THE FELLOWSHIP… is simply UNACCEPTABLE for blu-ray release, at least, if we want to strive for the high standard we all know the blu-ray format can offer us, instead of letting it slide backwards to the washed out compression that the studios are trying to force on us.

I am not saying I preffer the HD broadcast over the blu-ray, for it shows its share of issues too (mostly, compression artifacts), but, by comparison, it serves to prove that the blu-ray is HIGHLY DNRed and waxed-up, and that it could be much improved.

Your fear mongering is about a month late fella. So, you preface this long winded post with the idea that screen captures don't tell the whole story, but then proceed to show screenshots that are supposed to convince us of the poor image quality of the BD release compared to the HD broadcast?
Really? No one cares anymore. Even the reviewers on this site have "softened" their stance on the shortcomings of FOTR, since no one is complaining about the quality of TTT or ROTK at all.
No one is gonna listen to you if you haven't actually seen the blurays yet.

That Amazon price is tempting, but I'm afraid it's the Extended Editions or bust for me.

True. I haven't heard anyone who has seen them claim they were a waste of time or money.

I feel the same way. Just gotta hang in there.

I know I'm getting the EE's day one, MINUTE one, so I can't justify the $$$ of buying LOTR on bd twice. I just wish they'd hurry already...

Are the extra features on this exactly the same as they were on the "theatrical" version dvd set?

I got the trilogy on DVD just a little while ago, so I'm not planning on getting them on Blu-Ray anytime soon... I don't like the idea of owning the same movie more than once... the only exception will be Harry Potter in the future (After all the movies are released and the inevitable Complete set is released)

Yes, the extras on the theatrical version blow bad, they're pretty much just promotional pieces. I've been watching the extra features on the extended dvd version (i'm finally on the final disk for Fellowship) and I'm just blown away by how much bonus material they put in it.

so, by that logic you're stuck with DVD for every DVD title you already own.

Why bother posting at blu-ray.com? Only for new films released directly to blu but never able to upgrade from SD to HD for any catalog titles you already own???

I don't own a large library of movies... only recently I actually started buying them because I can afford them now... and when I saw The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter films discounted on DVD I bought them without even thinking about it.

In fact, those 8 movies, plus the South Park, Alex Rider, X-Men (Blockbuster subscription gift) and Shrek (Blockbuster subscription gift) are all the movies I own... so I'm not missing much if I decide not to rebuy my tiny library of films, am I?

PS: I actually joined the page to ask advice on some of the deals I've seen on Amazon... but since I can't yet make new threads yet asking for help, I'm simply reading the forums and posting my opinions...

I got the BBC radio dramatization at my local library today. I've only listened to the first 2 discs so far, but it's pretty entertaining and a little disappointing.

If I take one more step, I'll be the furthest I've ever been from home. I guess halflings really don't leave the Shire.

Its a dangerous business gandalf. I will break you.

I guess you're not missing out on too much with just 8 movies on DVD... but then again... that's "only" 8 movies you'd need to "rebuy" on blu.

One thing I do is to sell my DVD copies on amazon or ebay to help recoup costs when moving to blu.

One thing for sure... LOTR really is worth owning on blu if you have an HDTV. SouthPark bigger longer uncut is a nice blu too.

Good point... still isn't something I'd rush to do at the moment since I have a lot of things to buy this summer (specially games... Super Mario Galaxy 2 just released, and Metroid: Other M and Crackdown 2 are just around the corner lol), so I'll probably stick with my DVDs for the time being before "upgrading" them to BD lol

I picked up my LotR trilogy at Wal-mart. Curiously enough, they seem to be selling versions without the digital copies. I don't know if anyone mentioned this before, I just thought it was interesting.

Yeah, at Best Buy, they sell some with and some without digital copies. And they're the same price!

How much did it cost at Wal-Mart, if I may ask?
