You're sick of whom saying "they" will wait until the Hobbit? No one has officially said that Warner is waiting for the Hobbit movie to release the LoTR EEs on Blu. That's ALL SPECULATION on the part of people on this forum.

I thought Jackson said they were waiting for the Hobbit which hasn't even been greenlit yet?

That quote is very, very old and predates the recent fallout from the financial woes at MGM. If The Hobbit gets delayed much further or even cancelled, than it's anyone's guess when they might come out.

The actual quote also said that they EE would only be "closer" to the release of The Hobbit which, taken literally, only means that the EEs would be released sometime after the theatricals (since any date after the release of the theatricals is, by definition, closer to the release of The Hobbit).

Best Buy will cost you $90 = $30 per movie

Too much. I'll let them work on the price before I purchase. I want a $15-17 maximum per movie.
I'm hoping that with these new standalone releases that we have a pretty decent chance of either them or the boxset trilogy being featured as a black friday deal somewhere.

this is what i hate about bluray. they seem to only put out movies on bluray if there is something coming out for them, which is fracking lame as hell. i doubt we would have gotten ghostbusters on BD if it werent for that video game coming out at the same time. im glad that at least we got the 3 best bonds on BD so far (the first 3 connery ones) but now i gotta wait who knows how long till we get Goldeneye on BD! its crazy!

This has nothing to do with Blu-ray, catalog titles have always been selling less than new ones, even on DVD. So, the studios need to find something to cross-promote it. I'm glad for it, otherwise we would never have had some of the titles that are released on Blu-ray now, like Piranha.

Which is the only reason that I am glad that they are remaking Outland.

I can't wait for the original to finally make it to anamorphic.

If were we talking about DVD, I'd say "Welcome to 1998!"

Not much changes.

Well, I couldn't resist and bought the trilogy set today. Reading the back of the disc box cover on the bus home, I find out that the special extras are all on DVD...that's a bit disappointing. Will assess the quality of these Blu-rays over the coming days.

Like others, I find it silly that they just didn't cut to the chase and release extended editions (in favour of theatricals). You can't blame Peter Jackson, it's more than likely the studio @ fault here. I still feel that the movie and music industry (and computer software industry) should be far more heavily regulated by government bodies than it currently is. The consumer currently gets the raw deal far too often.

really? you want the government to start telling bussinesses when they can sell THEIR product? do you want a fed on every street corner waiting to give citations to girl scouts for not selling their cookies soon enough? geez man think about what you are saying!

At $15 at Wal-Mart and $15.99 at K-mart I may have to grab these. Of course I'll buy the EE's when released as well. What confuses me is I never really watch these. I find the whole Golum, Frodo, and the other hobit scenes repetative and very whiny. That said I still want them. They're just so cool. And the video is so amazing looking. I blame Blu for being such a great experience. Dam the greatness of blu.

Grrr....must...resist! I want the EE's, but since we don't know when they'll be released, I'm REALLY tempted to buy the theatrical versions. Sigh.

Yeah, I am in the same boat, however the repeat broadcasts of it on TNT every couple of months is making it pretty easy for me to hold off a few years.

I picked up the single releases last week and am perfectly content. Hadn't seen them in years, so it was a nice treat.

I'll pick up the EE when they're cheap so I can switch things up when I watch them every few years. Keep things fresh.

I'm pretty left-wing myself and even I find dpastern's comment quite strange. I'd think the all forms of government would have better things to occupy itself with than ensuring The Lord of the Rings Trilogy is released in its Extended Edition form on Blu-ray Disc.

Like universal healthcare, for example

I'm working my way through my BD set in the last couple of weeks (well, I've watched the first two, one week apart, and plan on watching the third soon) and really enjoying them. I worked out I've not seen ROTK since it was in theatres, and I'd only seen TT since seeing it in the cinema once, and only saw half of it that time (in its extended form), and that I'd seen FOTR like once or twice on DVD as well (in its theatrical form). I get the feeling in watching them that each one benefits from its extended version more than the previous one... but I'll borrow my bfs Extended Edition DVDs after I'm done with the BDs and decide for sure around then. Either way, I'm hoping that when they do come out eventually that they give you the option to watch both versions via seamless branching on one disc, so that you don't have to own 2 versions if you happen to prefer a particular theatrical cut over an extended. And that FOTR gets a remaster. I watched that on a 37" 720p TV and even then I noticed it was subpar. Especially some of the effects scenes, though that may have also been down to SFX being almost ten years old. Sounded GREAT though - that part was well worth the upgrade
