You mean that $7.99 for the whole set on last 'Black Friday' wasn't enough?

That was an admitted mistake by Target and really pissed a lot of poeple off if I recall correctly.
The next best(and practical price) for LOTR was Amazon's BF on the singles for $7.99/each.

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (Theatrical Version) @ £15.93
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (Extended Version) @ £54.99

Assuming your talking about the EE's you actually want this thread. --- though that thread is a bit of a downer right now, with some people freaking about about color and grain of the EE's based on some random screenshots (just like what happened right before the release of the Theatricals!)

Can anyone tell me if the sound quality is the same on both versions?

I don't care much for the extended scenes (I have them on DvD).

If the picture quality is a stepup from the DvDs on the theatrical version and the sound is the same, I won't bother with the EE's...

Thanks in advance!

p.s. I ask because at Amazon in the UK the TV is going for 12.90 pounds = 15€ vs 65€ for the Extended versions...

EDIT- I bought the TE. For 12.90 pounds, just too hard to pass up...

At around the 0:16:02 mark of Return of the King (bluray, Theatrical UK version Region B), just before the film cuts to a flashback of Smeagol strangling his friend, there is a really heavy bass effect in play, at which I can hear a distinct crackling/static noise. Does anyone else who own this disc have the same problem?

That is a drastically fictional representation! My TV was perfectly blue skies and white snow on the Extended Editions!

I haven't had the time to read ALL of this thread. So, if an explanation is available elsewhere, please feel free to point me into the right direction. I've no wish to clog up the thread with pointless rehash queries. Thanks, people!

I was watching The Fellowship of the Ring a few days ago, and the desire to check the audio feed came upon me. It listed a DTS-HD Master Audio 6.1 ES Matrix... Yes, 6.1. Finding that odd (and conflicting to the listed audio signal on the box, as well as the review here), I decided to check the other films. It's the same situation.

While this is a good "problem" to have, I was wondering if there was an explanation for this oddity. Has anyone else experienced this?

That is the mix. The films theatrically were Dolby Digital EX. It's not a "problem" at all, but the correct configuration.

Bought the theatrical set just now for $21. I heard that the 2nd & 3rd films were practically untouched in terms of remastering from theatrical to extended & its pretty rare that I feel like watching my DVD extended versions (its just too LONG! lol)

So yeah, at least now I can go back/forth between the cuts, I never really liked the extended version of the first movie

All three theatrical edition LOTR movies are listed at Walmart for $5.00 each today. DVD extras are included with each BD.

I had to look at that twice - an incredible deal! I also favor the Theatrical version of "Fellowship" over the EE Blu-ray.

I should mention it was from thehut.com (UK site) & I used a 10% off coupon + paid 99p to ship it. I really don't understand how they can ship things internationally for $1.30 $21 has been the standard price for the UK set for quite a while now btw

Also I wouldn't say I *favour the theatrical, I think the extended is a lot better yet its too time consuming

@ raygendreau

Even though I paid a bit more I'm glad to have them in a nice box Was never a fan of the movie covers

Just wondering if this was normal on the theatrical transfer, or if I have a bad disc. When the Watcher in the Water attacks in Fellowship it looks like red flashing/flickering is around the watcher, and the actors when they interact with it (sort of hard to explain). Its only in that scene, and only does it when the CGI effects for the Watcher are shown. I haven't noticed this watching the movie on TV, etc... I didn't have the DVD version, so I have nothing to compare it too.
