the usual shit has to happen. milk it with theatrical editions first. then the extended editions in individual releases. Then a boxset of extended editions with 'new' material including PJ's 108 days of thoughts on the Tolkien's world while on the crapper....you ain't seen nothing yet, its all coming

And since it seems the studios are perfectly happy putting out 2K upscales on UHD, I really can't see an *actual* 4K transfer happening anytime soon. |

But we all know that WB is (apparently) unwilling to shell out money for it (as seen with that six-film release). |

![]() P.S. I've got BD sets of both the Theatrical & Extended cuts and I don't think a 4K makeover would be that different - certainly not different enough to not watch the films or to keep watching DVDs until you get old and go nearly deaf & blind ... ![]() |

They should release The Fellowship Of The Ring on 4K and make it even greener. The board would be a lot of fun again.

Wow, I have to reply to the same thing in two places as you double-posted:
"Deep thinking. He was over 70 and retiring - and didn't want to commit to a 3-4 year project. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was possibly a nice closing statement for him and certainly a nice last paycheck. Ian McKellen, who was almost 9 years younger and not retiring took the role and ran with it. Sean enjoyed his last 17 years on Earth privately with family and friends. Perhaps when you're older it won't seem so strange - unless you're still chasing fame and recognition, which Sean Connery had had plenty of, thank you ..." ![]() |

Picked up the Remastered Theatrical Edition Blu-rays, and just watched a few minutes of Fellowship.
Having had the Extended edition Blurays for a few days before I returned them due to some issues, I can only say wow! Night and day difference between the old and these supposed 4K remasters. The Lord of the Rings title cards pop which I never noticed before and that green tint from the Extended editions is gone. From the scenes that I saw I didn't notice that excessive waxy DNR look to Gandalf, Frodo, or Bilbo. However, I will say they do look like they were shot on the Arri Alexa cameras than on film. Sound wise, that Atmos/TrueHD track wow! I'm truly impressed here. The only pity the Spanish dub for fellowship is still old school 2.0 Dolby. However, having my sound system with Dolby Pro Logic II, it nicely put it back to something close to 5.1. I'm going to watch the entire trilogy and give my feedback on these new Remastered Blu-rays. Though, from what I've seen I'm impressed. |

did you get through your watch of these discs? any further overall thoughts you said you might make more comments on? I am thinking of picking up 2010 theatrical version of the trilogy and then a copy of these 2021 remastered versions of the extended editions (which i believe are the same as the remastered theatrical versions and doesn't for e.g. have the green tint in fotr, but both still have some differences in colour grading for certain shots/scenes/elements etc. compared to the previous releases). Am interested in experiencing both.

Hey guys sorry for the confusion and I'm trying to read my way backwards to get the context, but wouldn't any "newly remastered" blu-rays merely be 1080p downconversions of the 4K masters used for the 4K release? In other words... just get the 4K discs (which bring HDR and 4K res)? Or are these "remastered blu-rays" something separate entirely that don't leverage the new 4K masters?
Thanks! |
