BOTTOM LINE: These are expected to be barebones theatrical releases, with a planned double dip to boot. Combine that with the price, and it's a no-brainer "pass" for me. I applaud them for making the films available, and at least giving us a choice. My choice is "sorry, I'll wait for the 'real' versions Peter Jackson is working on." |

Well I am curious about the extras (if any)
If they include the same extras from the DVD's I will upgrade, I can sell the old DVDs and then use the money to buy the theatrical editions on BD... Theatrical or Extended, I have waited for Lotr on Bluray for a long time... ![]() |

if you have the extendeds at home, if you watch one of the bonus discs there's actually some rough footage of Sauron appearing to Aragorn in spiritual form, trying to cast a spell on him, then eventually turns into the real Sauron. It's pretty cool to see, but I totally understand why PJ did away with it.

The troll you mentioned is referred to in the book as the Mouth of Sauron, as he'd forgotten his own name. And in the book he was a man, not a troll. Exactly. No one even so much as caught a glimpse of Sauron, except in the Palantir(that nifty magic orb Saruman had). |

They are talking about the troll Peter Jackson added digitally to hide the actor dressed as Sauron in that final battle |

I own the extended editions on DVD and am probably just going to get the theatrical versions on BD. I like LOTR but it isn't to me what it is to some others hence, I'm taking a step back from 4+hour versions back down to the 3 hour version.
Either way, it's exciting that we're getting closer to having LOTR in high-def. |

I think "intentionally holding back to make us pay twice" is a little harsh.
I think putting together a quality BRD for the EE is not something you just printout of the computer. It takes some time and care, and PJ wants to be involved. With Lovely Bones and Hobbit looming, I am sure he is busy and will get to it the first reasonable chunk of time he has to make sure we get the best stuff. So in a way, they are actually accomodating those of us (me included) that are impatient about finally getting these on BRD in one way or another by at least releasing the theatrical versions. |

Sweet news.
This is one of the few times I know I would double dip in a couple of years, and gladly accept it. It's just too tempting to let it pass. Its almost guarantied that close to release date, there will be so many offers to grab peoples money that I wouldnt be surprised if amazon drops the price below 50's. By the way, cool artbox, and by the size it looks like 3 regular cases. |
