The studios make movies, release them into theatres and then make DVD and Blu-ray versions that they sell to consumers? And a significant portion of the profit for all that allows them to make us more movies, and even more importantly allows them to fund the preservation and restoration of the films we all love? Does it drive me crazy that there's been like 15 different editions of Terminator 2 and Tomorrow Never Dies released on disc in the last 10 years? Sure. But I'm certainly not going to get bent out of shape over a couple different versions of a film I love being released on disc a couple different times, especially when they're debuting on a new format that I happen to be excited about... and especially when YOU KNOW IT'S GOING TO HAPPEN IN ADVANCE.

Look... Lucasfilm has been re-releasing the Star Wars films in various forms since 1977. What's irritating about it is that they haven't yet delivered the ultimate DVD box set they've been teasing for 12 years now. But only a very slow person at this point (or someone who just fell off the turnip truck) is going to buy any new version of Star Wars on disc without realizing that another, maybe more elaborate one is going to be released eventually.

There's gratuitous and even shameless double-dipping, sure. That's one thing. This, IMHO, isn't it. I understand a measure of your frustration, but look... new formats mean new versions of films you probably already own. That's how it works. Actually, that's kind of the point. Plus, you have to remember that not everyone wants or will even be able to afford the cost of a $300 ultimate edition box set of these films with 700 hours worth of extras. For some people - for MOST people actually - a cheaper more movie-only edition like this is all they want. And again, you have the freedom to choose, and you KNOW a better edition is coming eventually in advance.
Well said bill.

Also, did peter jackson oversee the transfers for the movies? WB took over new line and their tranfers are not good at all. i worry that these movies are going to have the usual WB problems.

i am still pissed WB oversees New Line's transfers now. shoot em up is still one of the best looking WB titles (if not the best) in my library. awesome flick. great presentation.

i hope they do not screw over this release...

Warner didn't drop the ball on The Dark Knight. They know better than to screw this up. Or for their own sakes, I hope they do

But this IS the biggest release ever on Blu. I mean look at the Top Sellers list here only, it currently is the Lord of the list And there is no concrete release date also as of yet. Tells you a lot about how many people have been waiting for this

The Hobbit was a beautifully written, incredibly imaginative childrens book, with wonderful adult humour combined, and I truly love it, but it has none of the epic scope of the totally "adult" concept LOTR books.

I am also fascinated how they reduced the huge LOTR books to 3 films but will EXPAND the relatively small The Hobbit book to 2 films!

second movie will be transition from hobbit to FOTR (covering time among those two movies), os it's not like they will do 2 movies from The Hobbit BOOK.

Actually, Jackson said he stands behind the theatrical as well as the Extended. Like James Cameron, he stands behind the product he releases, he doesn't pull the "studio made me do it" card that you hear from other directors. If he signs off on a movie in any length or format, and he delivers that film to be released and it has his name on it, he's going to stand behind it.

God you're annoying. Is 50 minutes not close to an hour? Anyway I will buy both sets because I like both sets. When the sets came out on dvd I had no problem buying both. There are just some things worth double dipping on and LOTR is one of them. So now take and save up your pennies so that in a few years you can get the EE's. I'll have the TE's to enjoy.

I agree fully with what you say. There really is no big financial issue with buying the three TEs when they come out, and then buying them again in 2 years when the EEs come out. How Will I EVER save up $100 (if even) in 2 years?!?! OH NOES
