Actually what I want is both versions (Theatrical and Extended) on the same set, with seamless branching. If they can squeeze three version of Terminator 2 on one disc, I don't see why it wouldn't be possible to get both version of LOTR on one disc, provided they use seamless branching. The technology is there, so they might as well use it for these movies. That would be the perfect set for me, so I'm holding off from buying for now ...

Exactly - to each his own.

When the DVDs were released, I made it a point to wait for all of the Extended Editions. Glad I did - they're great.

I just don't think I'll do the same for BD now that I have the DVD EEs. If, however, I could sell the DVD EEs for $50, I'd do it. That just won't happen.

Because it's the version I prefer to spend my money own instead of the theatrical releases.

I understand why some prefer the regular versions, it's the one they like and they feel there is no need for the extra hour or so of scenes the EE have. To each is own and everyone will be happy.

I'd have to have the extended of Return of the King for Sauraman alone. Add in the hinted at story between Eowen and Feramir.

Yeah, the Sauraman storyline should have been included in the TE. And don't forget the "treebeard catches Merry and Pippin smoking pipeweed" scene. LOL. Classic.

What's classic about it?

That's one of the embarassments of the Jackson adaptation. "Pipeweed" is tobacco. It isn't marijuana. Why Jackson chose to imply that Pipeweed was similar to marijuana is absolutely beyond me.

It's not really classic Ernest. I was just using the word as a figure of speech. Like some people use the word "cool", but it's really not of a cooler temperature. And I didn't really find it comical due to some marijuana reference that you seem to be making. I thought it was comical because "pipeweed" is organic from the earth (a plant) and would be offensive to Treebeard because he too is organic from the earth. In fact, I didn't even know that PJ "chose to imply that pipeweed was similar to marijuana." I certainly didn't take it that way. I know people who are a fanatics about cigars and tobacco that would say something similar to what the characters stated about pipeweed in the films.

I think he's referring to the scene where Saruman says to Gandalf, "Your love of the halflings leaf has clearly slowed your mind." There's also a lot of scenes where Aragorn and Gandalf are smoking late at night before bed and seem to tap into visions and are able to "see" more of what's happening in middle earth. Giving off the vibe that the weed is pyschotropic.
I've always wondered what was up with that. The books make it seem like it's normal old pipe tobacco.

Tolkien left it vague and I don't think the books ever call it anything but "pipeweed", seemingly because the word "tobacco" was not used in Middle Earth, but perhaps also because you could interpret it as something else. Not necessarily marijuana, but some plant that helps you relax when you smoke it, much as tobacco does but perhaps in other ways as well.

It is interesting that Jackson chose to get a little more specific about it and imply other effects. But to get back to the original question, I too think that Treebeard was much more concerned with the practice of cutting and burning plants -- any plants -- for pleasure.

Yeah - not so vague.
