This is a fantastic question.

Not a fantastic question because the theatrical releases had dolby digital 5.1

So this is new sound for these highly anticipated releases

I think it would be a good Idea to put it to a vote to show WB/NL what we want. I'll start the topic, but unfortunately my topics usually get locked or they dissaper.

The DVDs look really old, even upscaled to 1080p they look like trash IMO, I don't watch RADVD anymore though (regular as* DVD) so maybe they do look good to some people.

Even the HD presentation on TNT blew the DVDs away and that looked like piss poured over a fart.

Anyway, the day is clearly marked on my calendar and I will be taking it off from work, my lady has never seen these movies and I've been holding off for a year knowing the BD would HAVE to come out eventually.

The EE had 6.1 so either they are matrixing the back channel to 2 back channels or they are adding an all new channel.

This is not the EE this is the TE and they had DD 5.1 and on BLU they will get DTS MASTER 7.1.

Really don't see where you are going with this

I agree with this. I have an Oppo BDP-83 and even with ABT VRS deinterlacing and scaling at 1080p, the DVDs were no match for the HD TNT broadcasts. I'm not sure why people rave about how great these DVDs look.

It doesn't matter that it was the EE. The EE had 6.1 so they obviously had a back channel to throw in there. Where did they get that back channel from? It might have come from the release in theatres. So they have a surround back channel from the TE that was never used in the DVD. I'm asking if they are matrixing that back channel from or adding a whole new channel that has never been released before. Is that a crazy question?????

Why don't you just ignore me since you obviously can't comprehend my question?

Double agree with this, the DVD's look horrible, especially with distant shots. It just looks blurry and fuzzy. This will be one of those films that definitely benefits from Blu-ray, I'm sure they will look amazing.

billypoe: I edited my tone but unfortunately I wasn't quick enough!

Also talking about the DVD quality of LOTR, I find some of the closeup shots of hands look amazing, but other shots of large open areas look fuzzy and not anywhere near Blu-ray quality.

yeah, I noticed the same thing. Closeup shots looked decent-good, yet whenever they pull away and show landscapes and such, it just looks beyond horrible. I tried watching a bit when I first got my projector and it was like icky.

Double dipping bastards. Sadly I'll be one of the suckers to get the theatrical version when it comes out. I've been waiting for this trilogy to get on blu-ray forever and I just can't wait for the extended version.

I'm just disappointed that WB is not going to put these in one case

But if you can't wait for the extended, they are not exactly double dipping you. Peter Jackson wants to work on the extended and release it with the Hobbit. WB knows that people are asking for LOTR, so they are releasing this in the meantime. The other option was no release until the Hobbit.

I'm not that concerned that we aren't getting the extended cuts now that I know we are getting DTS-HD MA 7.1

I prefer that compared to releasing the extended cuts *now* with TrueHD 5.1 and not as much effort put in.

Before blu, I thought they were great. After blu, ALL regular DVD's look VERY SOFT to me. My Samsung uses the HQV Optix processor for upscaling, one the best available. Still, all standard DVD's look like crap to me now. Don't plan on EVER watching standard again & am giving them away every time a blu version comes out. Viva la blu-ray!
