We spoke with authoring today and we are targeting the end of January to be finished. If we hit this date, then the disc should be available in March.

We have also decided to create a scaled down version for DVD. At this time we are not sure if the disc will be bundled with the Blu-ray or a free download.

Are you guys any closer to finishing on the authoring of the new disc? Are you still on target to have it released by March? Thanks!

Don't know yet. We went over 25GB so some stuff is being removed to make it fit. We hope to have a new disc to test in the next two weeks. After that we will have a better idea if we hit March or not.

Basically once we sign off on a disc, then its 4-6 weeks from that point that the discs should be ready.

The replicator we have a relationship with can't do BD50.

We are cutting a 4-minute Lighthouse clip, which is from the BD I released a couple of years ago. We are also cutting the 2D dedicated encode of the new montage. I did a lot of side by sides and nothing stands out between the 2D dedicated and the left eye of the MVC, so I am OK with that cut. We started just by cutting, but still needed more space back.

No patterns were cut.

We only created frame packed 3D. Some players offer Side by side output from frame packed.

Nice. Reading now. Thanks for sharing. It now makes me even more excited for the 3D BD.

Would this MVC-encoded montage play on my 2D-only display?

2D players see only the left eye of the MVC stream, which is also called the base view. 3D players see both the base view and the dependent view.

By default the disc is setup to output 2D. You have to go into the disc setup menu and put the disc into 3D mode. This is interesting on a 2D player and a 3D player set to output only 2D because it allows you to play the dedicated 2D clip and the base view from the 3D to compare. There are a few clips like this. The zone plate is one example. The 2D zone plate is in VC1 because I was able to get better quality than H.264. The 3D is MVC. In this case it boiled down to different restrictions between VC1 and H.264.

Most of the test patterns are single frame encodes. Well two if you count both eyes. If we had to encode the patterns as running video, like the first disc, this would have taken more than one BD50. There are over 3000 assets on the disc, which made it really complex to author.

We opted for BDMV over BDJ for load times. I don't like how long BDJ discs take to load. BDMV has more restirctions. For example, all menu assets (buttons, etc...) must fit on 4 x 1920x1080 sized pages. Think of them as a big mosiac. We actually filled all four pages, which we were told never happens.

Its going to be a lot of fun to QC the next disc. So much to go through before we can replicate.

Stacey,

Do you know the approximate size of the grayscale and color window patterns that are going to be on the upcoming disc? When I say size I mean the % of the screen area that the windows occupy. If I remember correctly, the DVE disc uses 18% size windows, and the AVS709 disc uses 15% size windows. Since I own a plasma tv, I am hoping for somewhere in the 10-18% range.

Also, will the disc be able to be played back at 24p on BD players that support 24p output?

Our window patterns are what we call equal energy. Similar in concept to the constant APL patterns on the AVS disc. This means it works on plasma. The window itself is probably 8% in size but all levels are represented on screen at once so voltage regulation in a plasma or dynamic IRIS does not cause mis-reading on grayscale or gamma measurements.

With the exception of some special motion patterns that test 30p or 60i content, everything is 24p.

As soon as authoring is done and we sign off that there are no bugs, it will take 4-6 weeks from that point.

I will post as soon as I have a new build of the disc to start testing, which I hope is in the next two weeks. I will post again as soon as we say its bug free and ready to go to replication. The next build should be fully authored and at that point it will come down to bug fixing, if there are any.

The 4-6 weeks is an estimate. They make the master and send us a couple of check discs to validate. Once we validate the check discs, then they go and replicate, package them up, and ship them out.

Stacey, would be awesome if you could hold a forum contest to win a free copy! (When available of course)

Obviously I could not participate being a mod, but would be great prize to a lucky member.

Once we have discs in hand, we can give away some on the forum.

We should have a new build of the disc to start testing tomorrow. It will take the weekend to go through everything and validate all of it. I will report back on Monday how the testing went.

I just bought a Samsung 51" 3D television about 3 months ago. So I, for one, am looking forward to hearing about how the testing goes. Hope all goes well, I'll be coming back here Monday to read all about it ! ! !
