https://theiabm.org/iabm-webinar-how...is-color-bars/ Skipping to the later, given the importance of color bars to those in the know, one thing I will add to Norm’s short review at the end (~ the 47:15 timestamp) which I don’t think was covered at all is that ITU BT. 2111 was published a while ago and subsequently when content providers put those recommended HDR color bars thru tone mapping to BT. 709 they got weird distorted color bars with the brighter colors being attenuated which caused all sort of problems. So, the EBU will be coming out in the coming weeks with new HDR color bars (as well as some other test signals, etc. – luma ramp, saturation check, Quad SDI check ) which should help drive greater consistency in HDR -> SDR down mapping enabling content providers to be more confident and precise in what their HDR signal will look like when it is viewed by SDR audiences. |

Would be nice if the organizers of the Hollywood Professional Alliance’s Tech Retreat starting tomorrow resurrected this – https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...l#post12591966
before everyone gets too old and out of shape to run the bases All work, no play makes Jack a dull boy. P.S. One refreshing thing about the Tech Retreat is that by and large (although there have been a couple exceptions over the years, e.g. Ian V. of LightIron) people at the retreat, thank goodness, don’t talk similar to this, for which the following might be a record and IMHO has become far too common in society in which the speaker doesn’t even realize his/hers over usage of the word – Last edited by Penton-Man; 02-16-2020 at 06:59 PM. Reason: added a P.S. |

![]() ![]() Samsung Onyx - Interim conclusion after two years of LED cinema The Swiss IT magazine Netzwoche spoke to cinema entrepreneurs Edouard Stöckli and Andy Bohli, owners of the digital signage integrator Imaculix. Stöckli is considered a particularly innovative cinema entrepreneur. Unsurprisingly, he was the first in the world to invest in a commercial Samsung Qnyx LED installation. The conclusion of the two is mixed - while the LED technology works well, the picture quality is enjoyed by visitors and cinema operators need less space, the conclusion on the business case side is less good. The price of LED compared to digital cinema projectors is just too high. Also because the potential of the technology cannot be exploited because the industry standards (DCI) are designed solely for projection. Features like HDR - already standard for LCD and OLED TVs - are not supported by the studios. Cinema entrepreneur Stöckli relies on digital projection in the new multiplex cinema center. A multiplex with 14 halls is currently being built in Basel, but unfortunately without an LED screen. "At the moment it is not the technology, but the price," said Stöckli in an interview with Netzwoche. The response from visitors was very good - “but LED cinema is not a pilgrimage”. But the market continues to move, in addition to Samsung, LG has now also introduced a cinema-certified LED. It remains to be seen whether competition will stimulate business. It is not the cinema operators, but the studios. Only a higher number of installed LED screens worldwide would cause studios to adapt their productions to LEDs. In contrast, digital signage in the cinema foyer is experiencing a boom, as digital signage expert Andy Bohli reports in Netzwoche. The intelligent delivery of content not only enables cinema operators to noticeably increase sales of popcorn and cola. "It turns out that by targeting the screens to the target group, customers can be encouraged to attend other film screenings. We are the global leader in Switzerland, both technologically and on the creative level. ” |

the details - https://www.etcentric.org/hpa-tech-r...een-4k-and-8k/ To give Retailer Insider Robert the benefit of a righteous 8K mission, one weakness in the restricted design of Michael’s study in which he essentially was assessing for the ultimate value (or not) of 8K tvs based on BCVA is that only one 8K tv was used and no side-by-side testing with a like- for-like 4K tv next to it was performed. P.S. Methodology would have been best if they’d also screened observers with a color deficiency test like Ishihara as other studies assessing for picture quality have done so in the past. |
