NHK’S 8K FLAGSHIP CHANNEL FACING UNCERTAIN FUTURE

Quote:
The future of the world’s first 8K broadcast TV platform that was credited with helping ignite interest in a new generation of high resolution televisions now slowly gaining traction in the market, is faced with a channel cutdown decision, according to reports out of Japan.

Japan’s national public broadcaster NHK’s BS8K flagship 8K television station that was scheduled to televise the 2020 Tokyo Olympics this summer before the outset of COVID-19, is awaiting a decision about its future. The announcement was made as part of NHK’s 3-year plan starting next year, according to U.K.-trade publication Advanced Television.

As as part of that plan, NHK will cut two of its four satellite channels, while consolidating the current BS1, BS Premium and BS4K broadcast satellite channels into one.

8K TV: What you need to know
Actual TVs with real 8K resolution are on sale now. Should you care?

8K TV buying advice: Don't

Before we get into the nitty gritty, here's a quick summary of our current thinking regarding 8K TVs.

Unless you have money to burn, don't even consider buying one right now.
From what we've seen, there's very little image quality improvement over 4K TVs.
Any image quality improvement we've seen required sitting very close to a very large screen.
To get the most out of any 8K TV, you need actual 8K content.
There's basically no 8K content (movies and TV shows) available right now and little prospect of any in the next year.
Both new consoles promise 8K resolution, but that's potentially very misleading.
In the next few years 8K TVs will get cheaper and perhaps actually be worth considering.

Now that you've slid your wallet back into your pocket, sit back and soak in everything there is to know about 8K TVs today.

They could take a few minutes to cover HDR and WCG since that got left out of the 4K educational process! Missed opportunities.

Nah . . . that will just confuse Joe Public. The entire site is explained as:

Quote:
There is a clear trend toward bigger and bigger TVs – a trend that plays well to 8K and its increased visual and auditory immersion. It’s in these larger display sizes where the shortcomings of 4K TVs can become evident. As the screen gets bigger—and you stay sitting in the same place—you need more pixels to enable crisp and sharp images. While 4K is 3,840 x 2,160 pixels, 8K moves up to 7,680 x 4,320. 8K is about the number of pixels (four times as many as 4K), paired with High Dynamic Range (HDR).
That's the only plug for HDR. It's the KISS principal.

SAMSUNG’S 8K Q700T NOT SLATED FOR THE U.S.

Quote:
This just in from Samsung’s “It Can’t Happen Here Department:”

Samsung’s entry level 8K QLED TV series, the Q700T, which we recently reported on after it was announced by the company’s U.K. sales operations, will not be coming to the United States after all, HD Guru was told.

A company representative delivered us a terse reply to our query stating that the Q700T 8K QLED series “is not coming to the U.S., it’s a Europe-only model.”

So if you are reading this from the U.S., we’ll translate — fuhgeddaboudit!

Nvidia's GT3090 can do 8K @ 60fps, with ray-tracing enabled.

While I'd expect frame drops on early returns just because of people doing clock tests and whatnot, that's still huge for the progression of 8K.

For the last couple of years, I thought 4K/UHD would be the last physical format for movies, but now I'm not quite so sure.

I feel like in 2021, 8K will begin integrating more and more, with less than 5-years from now being a viable consumer product all around.

RTX 3090 (not GT3090)

Computer monitors have been higher resolution than television displays for decades. So it's no surprise.

What good is 8k if the 2020 IMDb scores are 4.0 out of 10 like most movies on there.
BTW, 8K is awesome for home movies, and Youtube Vlogs.

SKYWORTH UNVEILS Q71 8K TV SERIES THAT COULD COME HERE

Quote:
Skyworth, a leading Chinese TV brand preparing a major push into the U.S. TV market shortly, introduced the Skyworth Q71 8K television series at its recent Autumn Product Launch event in Bejing under the tagline “8K is Here”.

Skyworth said the 8K LED-LCD TV series is being delivered Oct. 1st in its domestic China market “at an affordable price point” with the aim of making “8K content available for a wider audience to enjoy, providing an 8K experience all the way with supreme audio and picture quality, fast connection and innovative voice interactions.”

The set is said to have HDMI 2.1 compatibility, including Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support, but more information should be forthcoming prior to a U.S. market introduction later this year or next.

The series includes three models, one 65-inch RMB11,999 ($1,762) and one 75-inch RMB17,999 ($2,643) in China. Pricing and availability in other markets “will be announced when ready,” the company said. An 86-inch version is planned to launch in December at a price to be announced later.

It's less impressive when you find out that they are using DLSS. The game is being rendered at a much lower resolution (1440p) and then AI upscaled to 8K. Older games can do 8K without upscaling.

We're still 1 or 2 generations away from REAL 8k gaming.

Still the biggest promotional push for 8K right now seems to be coming from the gaming world. The console life cycle is 7 years so I'm sure we'll see affordable 8K TVs in that time frame.

Sorry about my earlier post saying you should be able view 8K Youtube. I was working with an early Beta release software. Glad the update came out!

If you have a contact at LG could you please ask them if they are adding DSC support to the Z9?

They've announced it for 2020 models:
