Yes 8K is a thing, for upscaling content (they have inherently better chipsets for processing/algorithms). But it won't be for physical media is the contention by many. It would have to be an entirely new thing and it just seems so unlikely way the space is moving toward digital. 128GB is the cap for current efforts in realistic delivery of BD disc capacity.
Back in Blu-ray days we already knew that 66, 100, and 128 were capacities available in disc manufacture; just not used by the format. Which got used by UHD when that came along. There really is just no such pathway to suggest the same is true of a potential for 8K discs. p.s I highly doubt in 7 years time even 1% of the western world will have 10Gbps internet. Most the 5G hype is optimistically touting 20Gbps as possible.... way down the line. 5G will not start at the full bandwidth for consumer plans. More like just delivering wired fibre equivalent (100Mbps, 250Mbps, 1Gbps type speed brackets) ![]() Which, yeah, would be easily enough to handle a demanding 8K disc quality stream, but would an 8K TV you buy now even handle the incoming signal at a high bitrate that would be? That's the catch. By then you'll need a new 8K TV just for 8K content which would be only things like documentaries, nature content, special events and maybe a handful of 8K scanned hollywood movies, if at all any... |

Following years of development, the U.S.' "Next-Gen TV" broadcasting standard will start to roll out in the 40 largest TV markets by the end of 2020, a coalition of broadcast TV station groups announced Monday at the NAB Show in Las Vegas. With deployment, the optional capabilities of this new standard — which include the ability to get an over-the-air TV signal on a cellphone without using a cellular service or data plans, as well as 4K, HDR and an emergency warning system — could be available on supported TV receivers, connected cars or mobile consumer devices including cellphones and tablets. As it is a voluntary system, each broadcaster would decide which capabilities of the new system it would offer to consumers. https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/be...y-2021-1200217 |

Aye, the words "voluntary system" are what gives the game away. "So we could do all this amazing new stuff with ultra high quality or we could use the extra bandwidth and better compression to shovel in even more cookery channels in barely HD quality. Hey, why change the habit of a lifetime!"

![]() ![]() Sony unveils giant 785in 16K display If you think 8K is pretty advanced, feast your eyes on Sony's massive new 16K display. With a length of 19.2m, it's longer than a bus, the BBC reports. And measuring 5.4m high, it's about as tall as a giraffe. It has 16 times as many pixels as a 4K TV, and 64 times that of an HD set. Sadly, though, it's not for sale. It's being installed in a research centre belonging to Japanese cosmetics firm Shiseido in Yokohama, south of Tokyo. It's so large it will span two floors and show content specially created by Sony. The display uses Sony's Crystal LED tech, the Japanese firm's take on Micro LED. It doesn't need a backlight, and claims to go much brighter than OLED while still delivering similar black levels. |

^ Thats close to a 3.5:1 aspect ratio with a 63' x 17' screen (16640 x 4680), who would ever use that compared to 2.41.1 which is about the widest content you ever see in a cinema?
Had to ask! ![]() For most 16:9 displays a 16K TV would be using 15360 × 8640 instead. |

Damn, how I wish Sony would hurry up and introduce their first commercial MicroLED TVs. I really can't wait for that tech to go mainstream!
