Yeah, availability for true 8K content to be prominent will be at least a decade away. Even to this day, true 4K content are still too few and far in between. Mostly are only (good to very good) upscales.

10% store credit is the max. offer that all Samsung authorized dealers are permitted to advertise.

On another matter, I was just selected to be on the 8K panel discussion at CE Week NYC. Great line-up of expert speakers.

Here's a screen shot and webpage link of CEWeek's 8K panel discussion I'll be presenting on.

One or two more panelists will be added shortly. This will be a lively panel discussion with lots of valuable information.

On another item, I just signed on to have my 2019 TV Shootout at CE Week NY! Joel Silver, Scott Wilkinson, Kevin Miller, John Reformato and myself will run the event this year along with several VIP presenters and our panel of expert judges.

the Q900r has been looking great in my honest opinion. Running Life of Pi 4k, Infinity War 4k and Pacific Rim 4k all look good. I wish it got better black levels but the viewing angles does help, perfect directly. The tv does get pretty warm.

I can’t attend, maybe Penton will take his wife to some big time shows if he can go?
Me, I thought Long Island looked nice last weekend for the men’s PGA.

I'm drooling over the new Sammies but how much content is actually available for these TVs? Broadcast TV is still 1080i and I'm not sure 4K is even mainstream yet. I think I'll wait for the 16Ks next year

Interesting article. He reviews both 4K and 8K content. I would say he was “blown away” by the 8K content, but the 4K content was on par with a premium 4K display.

Good luck with getting actual 8K content on anything but streaming though. Will we start getting 2K -> 8K upscales? lol

Vincent Teoh was blown away by the TV as well, but I've got me a feeling that the exact same backlighting, processing etc tied to a 4K panel would still elicit much the same response...

Once they get Versatile Video Coding (VVC) in place, streaming 8K content will be doable. Will take about 40 MBPS. The development of the VVC standard is expected to be completed in 2020.

LG starts selling first 8K OLED TV - coming to US & Europe next quarter

LG has started selling the first 8K OLED TV in South Korea. The 88-inch TV will cost 40 million Won (approx. $34,000). LG confirms that it will launch in the US and Europe in the third quarter of 2019.

Five years from now owners of 8K TVs are going to start talking about 4K like the prehistoric age, like 1080p TVs and DVDs. And the 4K TV owners are going to start saving their money for that bright shining 8K TV star.

You cannot stop what's best.

I saw that too earlier this morning. They'll come down (price).

And it will be an ultra compressed McDonald's-grade look just like we have now with streaming. With lossy audio.

The industry NEVER learns. N...E...V...E...R.

And where's the content coming from, eh? We barely have true 4k as it is.

I've seen NHK's 8k stuff and it looks no better than 4k. It looks better blown up BIIIIIIIIIIIG (and who outside of the ultra rich can afford IMAX screens in their homes), but the actual perceived resolution was about the same.

We're getting into the ridiculous territory now. 4k with the promised 2020 or thereabouts color gamut, 12 bit, etc. would be just fine.

What a optimist.

See
H.265/HEVC vs H.264/AVC: 50% bit rate savings verified - BBC 9 Feb 2017

versus
Testing AV1 and VVC - BBC 30 May, 2019

8K: Delivery Challenges And Industry Readiness - TV Technology 10 April 2019

Even if you had VVC in place the implied savings might not be as high as 50% as comparing to previous codecs, then it needs to be incorporated into hardware processing which effectively means another generation of devices, with increased processing requirements (heat) I expect.

From the last article

Quote:
From a deployment angle, 4K services are clearly winning the race. They’ve been successfully deployed for both VOD and live applications. On the 8K side, NHK is the only entity that has developed a complete ARIB (Association of Radio Industries and Businesses) specification for 8K distribution and has deployed it in Japan on a satellite distribution system, and we have seen some VOD announcements recently, such as Rakuten TV in Spain.

I hate to break the news to you . . . there isn't going to be a videophile 8K format like there is for 4K (UHD-BD). For 8K to succeed, it will depend on the masses buying into it and that means streaming.

The content will come from 8K shot TV shows/movies and 65mm movies transferred to 8K. With less than 200 of them ever made, that category will be the smallest available pool for 8K content but it may be the first to arrive as many of those films exist on 8K masters already.

TV manufacturers aren't going to expand 4K. No 12 bit panels, no REC 2020 color gamut. Those improvements will probably show up on 8K TVs in the next 24 to 36 months. The only improvement you may see to 4K TVs will be increased HDR brightness - up to 4000 nits.
