what's your point? :: how about listing the weakness(s) of the LG 8K OLED?
"merely producing" seems a 'stretch' and hardly fair (how about at least waiting until 'you see' it 'yourself' and then 'tearing it down'?) |

time will tell
LG (possibly - i am expecting a lot of their effort) Samsung (no - although admirable - their 'first to market' is a remarkable achievement - in retail, it's already compelling for many reasons) Sony (i do not know - haven't seen one yet - looking forward to it though) is that really 'what those of the forum think'? question :: do you 'know otherwise' or simply 'what you think' (perhaps - including 'others of the forum'?)? What the panel can do (manufacturer BS aside) means **** all without the processing and HDMI signalling protocols to go with it. My TV has a 120Hz panel, that doesn't mean it can do 120p content.
As to the wider question of longer term compatibility, we're not getting HDR 2 any time soon so in that respect 8K TVs will be fine but for all this extra frame rate capability e.g. full fat HDMI 2.1 then someone buying an 8K TV right this second is going to be behind the curve. I bought my first 4K TV in 2013 and it was woefully short of the specs that were to come, that pertained to HDR more than anything but also 4K60, it could only take 8-bit 4:2:0 at that frame rate. |

As to its value for movies….well, the last foray into HFR presentation depended upon one’s personal sensibilities and specific scenes, e.g. - https://www.sportsvideo.org/2016/11/...two-sides-now/ |

![]() Well the AVN Adult Entertainment Expo was pretty close to CES time at Las Vegas for many years till 2012, use to be joke you could see both at the same time. Now the time is bumped later in Jan to help exhibitors minimize travel expenses and maximize networking opportunities compared to CES show consuming all the places to stay when CES is held. ![]() |

New screen technologies and 5G to drive 8k TV adoption
Worldwide TV shipments are riding high, ending 2018 with the strongest growth rate this decade. Value is up by 6 per cent, according to a new market report from Futuresource Consulting. The report also suggests that 8k TVs, which have yet to find an audience, will grow considerably from 0.2 million units shipped in 2019, to 130 per cent CAGR by 2023, as brands get behind the technology. Presenting at an 8k summit in New York, Samsung stated that 8k TV adoption could be solved by next generation 5G networks, adding that a transition to new TV resolution happens every 7 years. It believes that a concerted shift to 8K will begin this year. Currently, the 8k battle is between OLED and LED LCD, and Samsung’s QLED variant. But this may change. Chinese major TCL is fast tracking radical new screen technologies, such as printed OLED screens and Mini-Led backlit sets Established players in the TV market have been looking at Micro-LED, but ruled out development because it’s just too expensive to mass produce. TCL is undeterred. At the recent IFA GPC it announced the 65-inch X10s and the 75-inch Q X10S 8k models, both Mini-LED QLED models which use 20,000 Mini-LED lamps to provide 1000 local dimming zones. “Last year, worldwide TV shipments chalked up 227 million units, with a trade value of $85 billion,” says Matthew Rubin, Senior Market Analyst at Futuresource Consulting. “All this action is the result of a number of factors, applying pressure and influencing the landscape. Price reductions for premium technologies like 4k have started to open up the mass market; meanwhile.” Rubin adds that major investment in South East Asian production has helped both the local market, but driven down large screen pricing across the globe. “Despite some localised macro-economic problems, which have caused significant shipment fluctuations for several countries, the world view is positive.” http://www.insideci.co.uk/news/new-s...-adoption.aspx |

I don't know how 5G ties in with 8K Resolution, unless it has to do with Streaming. I think FTTH has more to do with Bandwidth than 5G. 5G will be great for Mobile Devices, but Fiber is the answer for Big Screen Home Theaters!

Select quotes from twice article:
"Flat panel TV makers including Samsung, Sony, LG, and TCL announced the introduction of 8K flat panel TV models, which are priced between USD $5,000 and USD $70,000 depending on the display size. “The cost of 8K TV sets is far from affordable for most consumers,” said Khin Sandi Lynn, industry analyst at ABI Research. “This will limit the sales volume for the foreseeable future; however, we can expect the price points to decline to a more reasonable level over the next several years just as 4K sets have.” "However, the lack of content and distribution models are more significant barriers than cost for 8K TV adoption at the moment. Aside from 8K channels provided by Japanese broadcaster NHK, there are no other 8K broadcast channels currently available, although Korean Broadcasting Corporation (KBS) is working toward an 8K broadcast." "While streaming service provider Rakuten recently announced its interest to provide 8K content in late 2019, service providers overall are not ready for 8K content, nor is there much incentive for content providers due to limited 8K TV set adoption at present." "8K content also needs larger data files, which creates challenges in content distribution and data management. Versatile Video Coding (VVC), which achieved 34 percent higher efficiency over HEVC, is currently in the process of standardization. VVC will play a vital role in driving the 8K TV market when the final standardization completes in 2020." https://www.twice.com/product/over-2...n-abi-research Last edited by HDTV1080P; 07-06-2019 at 02:45 PM. |
