I've got a 4 year-old and a 2 year-old, so I feel your pain (and joy).

yeah, I've got a 3 year old and almost 5 year old. My ability to watch these and many other blu's is severely limited. Don't want to give the little guys nightmares!

I can relate. I'm going to try and wrap up the last hour of the directors cut of Watchmen in between my 18 months naps today. I think once I get a BD and flatscreen downstairs it will be a bit easier to watch movies at my leisure. Like most of you dad's, my viewing times are once everyone has gone to bed. My wife and I tend to watch our sitcoms when winding him down to go to bed. Of course this means our hour shows tend to stack up. Anyway, back on point. I think I'll wait until after The Hobbit is released to see if he does some sort of ultimate edition. I have the dvd sets of the LOTR EE's and don't see much of a reason to upgrade right now.

I loved the EEs on DVD and I got TEs on BD as a gift. While not the usual way to double dip (as in buying twice), I will get the EEs for sure.

Count me in, a 5 and 1 year old. However, I think I am a blu-ray snob, for if I can't play these movies as loud as they are intended to be IMO, then I won't watch them at all, let alone watch them the entire way thru without interruption. Nothing worse then the oliphants rumbling across the Pelennor Fields and sounding like they are the size of a hobbit.

How on earth do you find the time to do that when you have young kids?

Um maybe for FOTR and TTT, but there is no way that ROTK's 251 min running time will fit on a BD50 without quality being compromised in some way. The bitrate of the theatrical ROTK wasn't that high and the feature size was only 30-something gigs.... so sure if they just added the extended scenes and used the same transfer for the rest of the movie, they *might* be able to fit it on a BD50 but that would mean the bitrate would be even lower overall.... I mean the bitrate for ROTK theatrical was in the single digits often.... I think the transfer was originally intended for HD-DVD (like the Matrix trilogy which also had really low bitrates).

Out of the three movies, ROTK is the one that least needs a new remaster, but if they were going to re-scan it at 4K and keep the bitrate high, they have no choice but to put it on two discs.

Never thought of it that way before!

Anyway, back on topic I think Frank Zappa would have loved the extended editions.

2 yr old and 5 month old here. I'm like you, wait for the right time to watch a blu in its entirety and of course at the proper volume! Of course, those times are few and far between!

See, I actually like having the movies split across two discs, and not because of any bit rate arguments. These movies are freaking long, and the split between discs creates a great "intermission" in the middle. In fact, the moments they choose to stop and restart on work very well, IMO.

I've always watched the EE's as a 6-part series as opposed to watching 3 overly long films, so my vote is for keeping the films split-- not that what I think matters, they'll release them how they release them, but it's my preference. I'll be buying them either way.

And I know some of you guys like to watch the entire film in one go, but c'mon-- you should take a moment or two to stretch and go the bathroom anyway!

Wow, not much action on here in a while. I wish we could get some kind of update. It's been a month and a half since it was mentioned.
