I would think with these movies finally being officially announced people would be more excited. Instead most people just want to complain. Personally, I couldn't be more excited about this release. When someone posted something about a June release a day or two ago, I thought it sounded crazy (way too soon), but now that we have a release date (June 28), I'm totally pumped about it. I didn't think they would come out until fall. Smart move actually, with Star Wars coming out around fall/Christmas. Most people aren't going to want to buy two huge sets at the same time, so sales would probably go down a bit (for both sets).
As far as the movies being split across two discs, I don't really care. I've been fine switching discs with my DVD set for years, so I'll be just fine doing it with this one. I also don't care about the bonus features just being the bonus discs from previous DVDs. Would I prefer them to just put all of the bonus features from each movie onto 1 Blu-Ray per film, of course. But I usually can't watch all the bonus features in one sitting, so it's no big deal to me. Plus, we'd still be getting the same content anyway. I know some want more bonus features, but the extended DVDs already had hours and hours of them, so anything new would basically just give us the same information in different words.
Sorry if I've gone on too long, but I simply can't wait for this release and I'm so glad we only have to wait about 3 months for it.

What will it get to make people happy? Split over two discs, complain. Video quality shot to hell due to compression on fitting on one disc, complain. I am glad the EE is coming out and in Canada, it is at such a good price. I will be keeping my SE because it came in the SB and it looks nice but the new box set will look nicer next to it.

Believe it or not, the Extended Editions of Fellowship and The Two Towers *have* been shown in theaters, and when viewing them in the theater, the films are "split up" for intermissions, exactly where they are on the DVDs.

Don't know if ROTK: EE has ever screened theatrically.

Does not bother me that the films are split up over two discs. I just hope for the sake of the people at Warner that they are not lazy with the transfers.

For whatever reason, I feel like this release is being rushed and something better will be out with the Hobbit.

I think most people realize this. I do - but I'm still buying this set.

Another mega edition of these films released w/ the Hobbit won't happen for YEARS to come.

If people want to wait, that's cool, but I'm going to enjoy the EE on Blu-ray then while others wait.

That is why I am holding off on this edition unless there is an awesome sale.

First The Hobbit will come out...then The Hobbit part 2...then probably some sort of 2-movie Hobbit set, and THEN the ultimate mega box-set. We're at least 3 years away from that one...

Don't forget about the Extended Editions of The Hobbit. Those will come out before the Ultimate Edition. Then I'm guessing the UE comes out a year later so they can promote all the "new material" before it hits the streets.

Frankly, at that point, I wouldn't be surprised if we weren't moving on to Red-ray or something like that. I'll be fine picking up these EE's, no sweat off my back to work a few extra hours or put a little bit of extra money aside for a one-time expensive purchase that'll satisfy me for at least 3, probably 4 years.

Forced? Gun-to-the-head? Family members kidnapped?

They'll complain then buy it anyway.

Actually, DVD was Red-ray.

I still plan on getting the theatrical versions sometime - I personally do not like the EE's. I like Gandalf's introduction to the Shire much better and feel the overall pacing is bogged down and some of the action sequences suffer in the editing - for me anyway.

The only thing I'll be looking at these for is the remaster on FOTR (it's my favorite of the 3) - if I read in the review that it is significantly better, than I might tip towards the EE.

I know, right? And I just checked and he really screwed up The Wizard of Oz as well. The first reel is ok, even though it looks like brown and white, not black and white, but then they decided to colorize everything after Dorothy lands in Oz. If you're going to colorize something, at least colorize the whole movie. They should have just left it alone in its original black and white. On the colorized version, you can totally tell how fake the background flats look.
