The end credits would last roughly 12 hours

Didn't I read on this forum that Jurassic Park is definitely coming out, whereas there has not been an official announcement for Indy Jones 1-3 yet?

highdefdigest.com, which is usually good about providing release dates, still has Jurassic Park and Indiana Jones 1-3 as "release date pending".

Hi All

I have a question the extended edition pack has 6 blurays and 9 dvd's

So each movie takes up 2 Blurays that crazy with the 50 gig capacity I can't see why they cannot fit the movie onto one disc they did the same with the DVD exteneded version of it and I understand why but on Bluray???

Pitty they did not make all the special features in HD they were almost as good to watch as the movies

Well the movies would need to be really compressed to fit onto 50 GB. With compression, detail would need to be taken away, contrast would be affected, etc. There's valid arguments that the quality would still be good on one disc, but with two discs, it's guaranteed that the 4+ hour films will look nice in HD.

Plus, the films were edited to be seen on two discs. Even when the Extended films were released theatrically, an intermission was added in the same spot where the "Change Disc" would be.

As for the special features, it wouldn't be possible to make them HD. All of the special features were recorded at Standard Definition, because it was 2001-2003 and studios weren't buying Expensive HD cameras for DVD movies. The way they are now is the best they can possibly look.
If you have an upscaler on your Blu-ray player, it can help make them look better.

I was watching those credits last night - I seem to remember them on the cinematic version, but not as long?? or is my mind deciving me?!!
anyway - they go on for around 20 minutes!!!
I am also suprised the cost to be in the fan club was only $10 - $30, I originally thought it would have been around $100 to get on the credits!!! My understanding it was for funds for the film?!
how many names are listed? I actually googled it, but couldnt be bothered looking more into it.

I don't think the endcredits take up much space.Watch the bitrate drop when it's just text on black background.Didn't know about the fans being included in the endcredits on EE DVD's.Was that the longest running end-credits?

I read a post saying:

"the EEs, while much longer, still omit portions of the theatrical films, making the EE's just as imcomplete for collectors as the theatricals themselves."

Never heard that excuse before.

You've never heard it because it's incorrect.

Actually, it's not. In FotR, there's a small snippet from the entrance into Lothlorien that's removed in favor of a new scene. Also, Gandalf's line about Frodo in the beginning of the film - "far to eager and curious for a Hobbit - most unnatural." There might be other examples, I'm not sure.

All the more reason to have both versions I guess.

Although the EE's are my preferred versions, there are a few areas where the TE's are better, IMO. For example, with "Fellowship" I still prefer the Hobbiton beginning of the TE and the music when the fellowship leaves Lothlorien (scene immediately preceding "The Great River").

I actually watch both... so I already have the Theatricals on blu... Personally, I prefer the Extendeds but the Theatrical versions are the ones that won 17 Oscars... so they're not too shabby! I've never sat to compare the two so I never noticed that things were omitted from the Extendeds that was in the Theatricals! Maybe I'll do a compare and contrast next time when I get the EE this summer!

Exactly, people forget that the lossless audio takes up far more room that compressed lossy tracks. So, if a movie took 2 DVDs to show, then you can bet it'll be 2 BDs as well. Plus with these films, you're gonna get the 4 commetary tracks as well, plus a any additional BD-related content.

And as for the extras still being in SD on DVD. As you said, this stuff was done in the '00-'03 time frame. (I think FOTR stated pre-production in '00 if I'm not mistaken) The best behind-the-scenes cameras were just 480i/p DVD quality DV cameras. We didn't have HDV cameras back then. This is also why all the Matrix extras were transfered to HD format (HD-DVD and BD) in SD. So I'm not surprised that this stuff is still SD.

Principal photography on all three films was from Oct 1999 to Dec 2000. Preproduction dates to 1997/ 1998 when design work and storyboarding was started. There isn't a ton of footage from this period in the EE supplements, and but there's some.

Check out the book The Frodo Franchise by Kristin Thompson for more on the history of the production.

It's interesting to me that two other big BD boxset releases this year - Star Wars and Superman, will have no DVDs, just BDs.

I wish they would've put the 9 DVDs worth of bonus stuff on 3 blu-rays instead. I know that it's all in SD, but it would be a cleaner package, with the added benefit of blu-ray's protective coating.
I would feel more "perceived" value from 3 blu-rays, than I would from 9 DVDs.
