Perhaps you bought one of his albums a long time ago, then it gets remastered in high-def 5.1 on SACD as we have seen with a few. The mix is not what you remember it to be, with parts showing up in the rear speakers and so forth. Or perhaps more emphasis on certain instruments comes through then before. Do we as comsumers get our undies up in a bunch over that? Now grant you, there is a stereo option as well with these SACD's, so you can hear it without the subdivision as it were. In any case, most 5.1 high-def mixes are considered very good and really open up as well as intimatize the music. It's generally that small group of "two ears-two speakers" purists who don't like the multichannel mixes. Now here we have a color tonality change in a movie that was not there before OR has shifted to a different hue. As demonstrated, we seen older versions of the movie have a pinkish tonality to the snow that are now green. In nature, there are times when a pink or warm tone happen, like in sunset/sunrise. The blue cast in outdoor scenes can also happen when you are dealing with a lot of ice and clouds. Those of us who are into still photography and Photoshop are always looking at tonality and color temp, so still captures, regardless of how many say they are not that important, are actually very important and let you see what's going on on a more intimate level. I think perhaps the bigger and possibly underlying issue here is actually that most people find the shift to green, or whatever "like" hue you wish to call it, one that appears to detriment to the picture itself. I personally agree with those who have said that this color timing has somewhat deadened the look of the film. It just doesn't shine as much anymore. Going back and using music as an example, say your listening to your favorite song and someone comes along and cranks up the higher frequencies of the graphic EQ in your system or perhaps just the treble knob. In any case, it would sound tinny and wrong. Yes, in the end it's a matter of personal preference, but some things or in this case some scenes just look outright wrong. Snow, particularily out in the sun, is NOT green. Sure there are movies like Saving Private Ryan, Minority Report and The Matrix that use color hues throughout the movie to express a feeling. The destruction and bleekness of war comes through even more in SPR with it's color hue. Same with the techno-bleekness and unhuman nature of the machines in the Matrix. The coldness of a world with a "big-brother" type security modality in Minority report. It works when it works folks. We know this. I'm sorry, but it doesn't work for Fellowship........

Regarding LOTR and the different colors >>> I actually had to think of a
different example when it comes to music. Many albums which get remastered
are totally messed up because of overcompression...clipping all over the place.
The dynamic range gets destroyed. Just google "Loudness War".

do you think it's safe to assume best buy would carry this on-shelf without a preorder an hour after the store opens on the 28th? i know box sets are limited and i don't know what the expectation is on this?

I knew nothing of the lord of the rings when I went to see it back then. I remember being at school and some girls were talking about how much they enjoyed it. My mother also expressed some interest in seeing it. So I thought, hey maybe I should see it. I had no idea what to expect from this film and when I came back I was blown away by the epic beauty of it, as well as the epic storytelling. I liked movies before, things like star wars were interesting enough, but after the fellowship I loved movies. The fellowship was a beautiful and amazing ride of which I had never, nor will ever experience any thing like it again. This dark, green and dreary mess of a picture is nothing like I remember it. i really wanted to buy this set, so i tried to rationalize these changes, but I just can't anymore. So I won't buy this set, because I am a real fan of these films.
now that is just plain stupid. Millions of people love(d) the films.

Oh, I agree.......the color timing is bad indeed. What I'm saying is direct and official doesn't mean diddly sqaut these days....nor should it. You've gotta have people who really care about the product, willing to admit something wasn't their best effort in the first place. Not people who see the all mighty greenback as the end-all, be all and who lack integrity and or courage. It's all dollars and sense, plauseable deniability, he said/she said.....you name it. I especially love the belief some people have that "if it came from Jackson or the DP or someone official in the studio", that it somehow makes it all the more believable? REALLY people?

This page has a comparison, but the EE looks better.

There is no doubt there is more detail, but this green haze that covers everything drags it down. Just check out 487..or whatever his name is posts where he white balanced the images. They look so much better. Things that are supposed to be blue are blue and things that are supposed to be white are white. I think it is very possible that the DP and the director saw a few scenes with the green tint, but didn't watch it in its entirety and missed how much its affects the images. Or maybe someone ****ed it up.

What annoys me as much as the change of colors is the loss of dynamic range
because of the contrast boost and underexposure.
Here's a comparison:

Second Picture: screenshot, exposure corrected

Ugh.. what was PJ thinking!

Sure, most people won't care (like with SW) but it still sucks.

Wow....that's really tragic. Again, if that's how it really looks now....holy cow, just another example of a botch job or somebody needs glasses. Seriously, in still photography, if that was a photo, everyone would be all over that. That would be considered an example of a beginner. As has been said....where's the dynamic range? I want to rephrase that old song "where have all the flowers gone" to where has all the dynamic range gone.

If this is what the Hobbit is going to look like: then the hobbit is going to suck.

I really want to see PJ come out and tell people that's how he INTENDED it to look. You'll see many people saying "it looks like garbage" switch right over to the side of "That's how the director wanted it to look so it's perfect".

On that we can agree. Regardless, I will have this day one. If only to have a version to watch until the "Super Ultimate Deluxe Mini-Shire with voice activated Gollum" set comes out.

Probably, but it looks awful and nothing's gonna change my opinion.

Since when Gandalf the Grey is Gandalf the Green?
