Because this is a NEW 2K transfer. The majority of the film was not color timed digitally the first time around. They obviously weren't able to do everything they wanted to do until now.

Hobbiton was. Why the change there? They put a lot of thought into coloring grading those scenes digitally the first time around.

I think what P@t_Mtl is trying to get at is that everyone is entitled to their own opinion. It's the trying to force that opinion on everyone else that several of us are taking issue with. (P@t_Mtl jump in and correct me if I'm wrong there)

While there is a "shut up and accept it" crowd, there is also a very vocal "everything is wrong with this film, nobody can like it" crowd.

Both crowds also have some very hostile 'members' who aren't doing either side any favors.

Guys, i have been trying to follow this issue and have read a lot of the previous pages over the past few days. But could someone please just summarise what exactly has happened in one or two sentences please? I'm a little confused lol. Has any reason been given by the studio for any of this?

Looks like someone threw an overlay over part of that image, just based on the way the WB logo changes color for the part inside the clip, whereas the part outside (in the black) stays constant.

It obviously didn't come out like they wanted, now they fixed it.

Really short version. The color timings for the Extended Editions on Blu-Ray were altered from what they were on DVD.

In general it looks as though most scenes now favor a cyan/teal color grade.

There are a few debates ongoing.
1. Regarding the decision (in general) of a color change (some prefer the new, some wish to have it as it was on the DVD)
2. Regarding the Cyan/Teal overlay, some find it overwhelming on every scene, some only on a few, and some don't have any issues with it.
3. Um... any others that I missed? I know for a while some argued about the packaging, and some argued about the extras being on DVD's instead of 1 or 2 BD's.

I think it's hilarious. I don't even like these films that much, I just think its funny that all these legions of followers who worship the ground PJ walks on suddenly think they know better than he does about his own films. If indeed he approved this transfer (and we already have a very good source saying the cinematographer - who is MORE responsible for the final image than the director - approved these discs), then its all a bunch of hot air. If it was a mistake, then they will certainly be fixed. If its intentional, then tough beans, everyone is stuck with what the director wants.

According to Peter Jackson it was about 70% which constitutes a majority.

Imagine you were wearing green tinted sunglasses while you were watching the lord of the rings. that's the problem. One source claims that peter jackson approved of this transfer, but no official quote.

Exactly!

I have a problem with comments that go to extreme like

"you are a blind fanboy if you accept this junk and like this release" or "you are not a real fan if you do not like this change because Peter Jackson as approved it".

I am sorry but come on everyone, these are movies. I understand passion about movies because I am here but some of you are acting like your first born child as been murdered or someone is abusing your grand mother. People are allowed to say they don't like the release because of the color change just as much other can say they like it and want to buy it without being insulted. Some of the stuff that as been going on in the past year in threads like Star Wars, Indiana Jone, 3D.....as make me come here less and less. I enjoy this site and this forum, we all have the same passion which are movies, if we did not we would not be here. The silly arguments and name calling that is been going on in the last 12-14 months have become more and more silly. I always felt this forum was so much above a lot of other forums about movies and I hate where things are going now. I understand that this is my problem and if I am not happy I can always get the heck out of Dodge City but I would find it extremely sad to do so.

Well, I said my peace, let the bickering resume now

I had my numbers switched then. Oh well. I guess the technology is better now to give him what he wanted the first time around.

Thumbs up The Lord of The Rings: Extended Editions

This is how special packaging should be done. It contains the standard blu-ray cases inside so they match all other films on your shelf. Unlike the last Narnia, Ten Commandments, Ben Hur, and all the stupid Warner Brothers digibooks. Outstanding!

Speaking of packaging, someone many pages back by now, mentioned they though the packaging reminded them of the goonies packaging.

Does anyone have some photos, or a link to that packaging?

Also, anyone like me and have the packaging remind them of the Harry Potter Ultimate Edition packaging?

I'll do you one better. Here is a video of someone unboxing it.

The packaging itself is really nice, IMO.

Thanks Greg! (thought I saw someone post a unboxing video link earlier, but I've got it so youtube videos don't show up when I view threads on my cellphone).

So looks just like the HP Ultimate Editions -- just without the slipcover/slipbox. Now my question is will it be the same height (if so, looks like my HP slipcover/boxes will be going into storage so when on the shelf they match height wise).

I have a friend who works for Warner Bros. (I know everyone says that, but I really do!) and he previewed what they have in store for the complete Harry Potter collection and he says it is absolutely phenomenal. It's been hard not buying any Harry Potter films on Blu Ray in anticipation for the complete collection.

Looks sort of like the original Bourne series box. Man, you'd think he'd put the camera on a tripod and be more careful with his stuff. He's throwing that box around like a rag doll.

I know. I cringed how roughly he treated that thing.
