I'm not going to listen to a single thing WB says on the matter. I need to hear (or read) the words directly from Jackson.

I canceled my Amazon pre-order for this set yesterday. Today I happened to see a post that said there was a similar color issue with The Matrix that was included with the Ultimate Matrix Collection. As an owner of that set, could someone describe to me what the issue with the Matrix is? Based on the screenshots for FOTR EE BD, I'm not happy with the new green (even though I know "Green" is the current buzz-word and thing to be), but I wonder how I could have missed it with The Matrix. Maybe it's my age...

Well you can probably bet that if Jackson says anything it will only be if it is approved by the WB legal department. I doublt he would burn any bridges with a major studio. That being said he many not make a statement at all and have it go through WB.

I agree, I liked it also. And, you are correct from your earlier post: The first (original DVD) release of The Matrix was unaffected. I had bought the DVD box set in 2004, and that's when I first noticed they had changed the color to match the other two films. Green tint when 'inside' the Matrix, Blue tint in 'the real world.' I thought it really added to the overall effect and feel of the movie.

A couple of months from now we'll all have our replacement discs from WB and look back and laugh at how this thread spiralled out of control

That's just the way it always was. Apart from the green tint the the logo is identical to what it's always been.

Apparently... it's always been that way *shrugs* Currently not at home so I can't verify that with the TE BD, and my DVD EE's aren't even currently at home (lent them to a friend recently). Never paid much attention to it to every notice, I asked the same question yesterday because when you have all 3 next to each other it stands out (more so than the color for me).
It's actually been ... quiet today --- which is actually nice for a change of pace. I think most of us have said what needed to be said. We have no new information, it's just the same things we've had for a week now. Can only say the same thing so many ways. Oh and people finally learned the difference between Opinion and Fact, so that helps keep things a bit calmer too |

They're shipping the US version for €75/€76, not too a bad price when they guarantee no customs hit. If I do eventually pick this up I'd prefer it to our local release, I think the age ratings really take away from a release like this.

I don't like quoting entire messages from other forums (particularly if they are large), but one scientifically-inclined home theater fan has posted a very interesting message at both AVS and Home Theater forums. He analyzed the color output from the title scene of FOTR EE Blu-ray using his fancy PC and lots of math. This is not a visual analysis, it's a completely scientific one. Let me say that in a different way so it gets burned into the brains of any "doubters"....
The method he used is color measurement by calibrated equipment and science, NOT by the human eye! Using his method, he came up with the following RGB values for the color of the letters in "Fellowship Of The Ring" title screen found on FOTR EE Blu-ray: Red: 188.6673214 Green: 203.5908847 Blue: 177.4033794 Compare that to the RGB values I got when I measured the title using Photoshop: ![]() His reading for red is slightly higher than what I got but the green and blue values are virtually identical. Here's his full message on Home Theater Forum (the comments after the link are mine, not his): http://www.hometheaterforum.com/foru...0#post_3824161 Those FOTR EE Blu-ray titles are tinted toward green. Enough so that they LOOK pale green instead of looking grey with a green tint. They've never been tinted toward green in any previous DVD or Blu-ray versions. Yes, they are tinted toward blue in the EE DVD version but not anywhere near as much tint as what we see in the green sample. Basically, in all previous versions of FOTR the titles look white or off-white. Likewise, the titles on TTT and ROTK EE versions on Blu-ray appear (and measure) as white to off-white (light grey). This subject is important because it doesn't make any sense that, during the color grading process, someone would manually adjust the titles to that ugly pale green. Digital color grading is all about selective adjustments of color. Having the titles end up being green suggests an overall green tint adjustment to the entire movie. That's NOT what Jackson and Lesnie explained they were trying to achieve in that digital color grading video. They were selective. Now that we also have evidence that there is some amount of green tint in the fade up and fade down of the closing credits (where no green tint had existed in a previous version), I am more convinced that ever that an overall green tint adjustment has been applied to the entire movie. Maybe it was intentionally applied and then certain areas were scrubbed clean of it? There are certainly lots of scenes that are gorgeous. But even in some of those gorgeous scenes, if you look at the sky or the smoke, you can see a green tint. In my logic-inclined brain, a green tint across the entire movie... a green tint that makes some scenes look godawful ugly... suggests a MISTAKE rather than an intent. Hopefully, Jackson or Lesnie or Warner Bros. will make a comment sooner rather than later. Mark Last edited by MEB; 06-21-2011 at 05:58 PM. |

If Jackson and Lesnie really intended a green tint over everything (including the title & credits), did they: - add the tint first and request that titles and end credits be colored to match the rest of the movie? OR - not add the tint first but request that every release has some color adjustments applied after adding the titles/credits instead? That still won't prevent me from enjoying my disc, but IMO this screams of a technical error (as opposed to a somewhat objectionable but conscious decision by the director). * My theatrical edition DVDs, for example, have the titles and end credits translated to French. I've asked on a French forum (of a website which was able to review the French release) whether it's also the case for this set - waiting for a reply. |

According to a couple messages over in AVS Forum, the release date for the Swedish version of LOTR EE Blu-ray has been changed to mid-July due to "production delays".
Source: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...9#post20597599 I don't know what the original Swedish release date was supposed to be but it's interesting news nonetheless. Is this a good sign with regard to the green tint issue?? One can only hope and wait. Mark |

The Scandinavian release date is/was July first... so far being in Finland I have not heard that the release would be delayed but if that happens I will keep you posted.
