Who's to say that PJ changed the color timing of FOTR to look more like the Hobbit will possibly look? Just a thought...

Agreed, I'm sitting here with mine now. Also of mention, the case has hidden magnets in it to keep the case covered.

Default Looked Great!

Just got through looking for green snow, sky & Gandalf & I didn't see any. What I saw looked very good! And the sound was great!

To my eyes, what I saw looked normal - certainly not over saturated, and I mean the picture as a whole. I don't know - YMMV.

The only negative thing today was that the BB I went to has sorted out the $5 off coupon & it wouldn't apply it to the purchase. Oh well, I've used it 6 or 8 times over the last week or so, so I can't complain too much, plus I had a $23 gift card.

Also, I'm sure its just a coincidence, but my player had a firmware update waiting this morning.

Other than the recycled extras - you may have to wait until The Hobbit for bare discs, the packaging is first class.

So, bottom line, what little I saw looked very good in a not totally darkened room on my non pro calibrated TV. Its adjusted per the appropriate settings recommended on the AVS forum.

I'm very happy! Waited a long time for this... Look forward to this weekend so I can start into them

Just downloaded the Fellowship digital copy and it looks amazing! It is a higher resolution than the dvd's LOL. Looks awesome on my iPhone.

Resolution is 853x352

Update: Oh and 5.1 Dolby Digital

Thumbs up A-OK to Me!

I just watched "The Fellowship of the Ring" up to the title card and I didn't notice an instance of green tinting anywhere. Waiting until I finish reading "The Return of the King" to my kids to start 'em. Only 3 chapters left! We can't wait to watch all the trilogy on Friday! (It'll be the kids' first time! Wanted 'em to know the WHOLE story first, just as I had.)

The rescan has been mentioned in some of the reviews. Also the lack of DNR and better detail in the new FOTR compared to the TT and ROTK is indicative of a rescan.

"For the theatrical release on Blu-ray, Warner used a digital master taken from a release print, but for the extended edition, Jackson wanted to rescan the original elements to get the most visual detail and clarity, and them retime the color for home viewing, adjusting the brightness, intensity and hues to best effect on TV monitors. So while "The Two Towers" and "Return of the King" were mastered from the same source as previous release, "The Fellowship of the Ring" was not."

I assure you, nothing was "taken from a release print."

I bought it this morning at HMV for 65$. I'm very happy with it. I think the PQ and color look very good. I took a look at the Shire, Rivendell and a couple of snow shots. Everything look very good to me. As other have already said, the green tint isn't as bad as on the screenshots posted here.

To be honest, if i didn't read this thread before or didn't know about the change of color, i would probably have never noticed it.... and no, i'm not blind. When you compare two screenshots, it seems obvious, but when watching it on the tv, it's not as obvious. I could hardly tell a difference between my TE blu-ray and my EE blu-ray if i would not have seen the screenshots.

that would be a cool feature. Howard Shore's Score is amazing for these movies and rightfully won 2 academy awards for them

Just watched the scene of Gandalf entering The Shire. Not only do I see anything overtly green to these eyes, I don't even notice the supposed darkening of the part where Gandalf knocks at Bilbo's door. Not saying these things are there/not there, but I'm SO happy I didn't let the typical overblown interwebs bullsh*t dissuade me from picking up this set (and it *almost* did).

That's actually the same resolution of the image on the DVD minus teh "black bars." If it was 1.77:1, the resolution would be 853x480.

It seems to me that you are dead set on not liking them and you would just waist your money.
Too late, they're on their way to my house as we speak. With all due respect mrpink, I can't imagine anything they could've done to these to get you to not like them. I remember you posting constantly in the theatrical thread about how there was no DNR in that release, the screenshots were "Lies" and some kind of ridiculous conspiracy, that the release couldn't be greatly improved upon, etc. Still feel the same way? Still feel that couldn't have been improved upon? I notice those sentiments mysteriously disappeared once this was released completely free of the hideous DNR overuse and general poor PQ that marred the TE BD. Thanks for keeping an eye out to make sure I don't "waist" my money, though.

I wonder what people will say when/if these are re-released without the overbearing green bias. Probably nothing, as they do currently with the whole DNR thing.

And by the way, I wasn't debating whether or not Jackson "changed his mind," or had the right to, I was responding to RAH who said Jackson intended for this originally but couldn't achieve it due to working with DI's being in its early stages.

I have to admit, this talk gave me pause as well - until I read the DigitalBits post on the subject from late yesterday, which includes:
So there it is. We have little doubt that the controversy will continue in some quarters, and that those who are convinced there's a problem here will continue to feel that way. Nevertheless, we are told that the filmmakers have checked the discs and confirmed this is the intended look. We suspect that when the discs are actually in YOUR hands tomorrow, the vast majority of you will be very happy with them. We further suspect that many of those who've been following the controversy for the past couple of weeks will wonder what the fuss was about. It shall be interesting to see what the 'morrow brings. Much rejoicing (and a bit of talk about 'revisionism'), we predict.

To quote myself here, I'm thinking that the horse race with the Ring Wraiths appears to be a tad too dark based on what I recall from previous viewings. However, this is when viewing on my lesser set (47" Westinghouse LCD) vs. my 55" Vizio LED.

I put in Two Towers to see if the transfer has been fixed when Gandalf and co. reach Rohan. On the TE, they all looked like plastic, but it has now been fixed.

I just received mine from Amazon. The packaging is top notch IMO. The hidden magnets to keep it closed, the maps, the photos, and just the very coloring of it is very nice.

I can't wait to watch these. Although, it may not be until the weekend.
