That's interesting. I watch it with subtitles too. I wonder if that is why I liked it too.

So few directors come down from the mountain to talk to the little people i doubt we will know Jackson's thoughts or intentions with the color changes. Kevin Smith is the only director who actually invites and answers questions on his films. perhaps after the hobbit wraps somebody will get the info out of him till then we will have to live with the changes.

Unfortunately, the only option we have now is to compare the TE with the EE and the detail enhancement in the EE will blow the TE out of the water every time. Quote:

For the record, I am more than pissed off at these FOTR color and black level changes. We can probably all agree that the trilogy really depends on how everything was introduced in FOTR. Peter Jackson got it all more than right in the theatrical release, and then EE release on DVD made it even better for all fans -- even more so those fans of the books.
But the color and black level changes in the FOTR EE Blu are almost stomach turning IMVHO. I hope they see the need, and listen to fan demand, and produce a re-issue of the FOTR EE Blu. It would not be the first major release that demanded -- and received -- a re-print. Has anybody at all commented that these changes are an improvement?!?! |

My guess is you'll be waiting for a loooooong time if you expect to see a complete flip back to the previous color grading. The debate can rage until the end of time about the global green tint being correct or not, but I don't see anybody trying to deny that in general the color timings are what PJ wants/wanted. |

Boone, when you do finally see it for yourself keep an open mind. Don't go in watching it trying to find the green tint and do needless screenshot comparisons. Just sit back back. Grab your favorite beer and just watch. I am quite confident that when you see it for yourself you will be sick to your stomach asking what all the fuss was about. The color palette IMO looks great and you won't be disappointed. |

My take on the issue is that the vast majority of people will not have a problem with the new tint/contrast change. We all embrace the improvement in clarity and detail. Those of us who have seen Fellowship many (many) times will absolutely notice a difference, but we will eventually adjust to it. We may wonder why the colors are different, and especially why Jackson chose to make the entire film darker, but a director will do what he wants. It's kind of like purchasing new glasses with a resulting improvement in vision, and then seeing your sister after she dyes her hair. Now on to "Towers"!

While we're engaging in conjecture, I might float the idea that Jackson and the principals at Warner know other versions are coming, and they want to maximize sales of the future versions. They maximized sales of the theatrical versions, now the extended versions. Probably the titles will be released individually. Probably they will also be bundled with the Hobbit and the Hobbit II years from now when they are on Blu-ray. If fans have motivation to get the "non-green tint" version of FotR, sales will be better on those future editions.

Or, could you elaborate a bit on what you feel is improved, and then I could go back and see if I can agree. Thanks! |

Saving Private Ryan - Sapphire Edition Blu Gladiator - Sapphire Edition Blu Those are the one's that come to mind, and all that was needed was to bring them back to the store for an exchange...in some cases months after release! PJ could authorize it if there really was a mistake made. |

Given Peter Jackson's track record, I doubt that he would have made such a sweeping change to the overall palate of the film. It doesn't really fit in his style given the appearance of King Kong and The Lovely Bones, which had very specific grading and weren't underexposed digitally. PM sent. I'm guessing the discs have different hub numbers. Do they have the green-teal tint problem too? |
