You could say, FOTR is kinda GREEN, TTT is too RED, and ROTK has too much BLU.

If you guys recall the EE DVDs came in green, brown, and blue cases for each movie. We know that green matches FOTR in this case. Does TT have a slight brown tint and ROTK a slight blue tint?

Well, if I'm going to limit my comments to what I know, I'll say that both FOTR and TT have been regraded (I haven't checked out ROTK yet). Neither of these movies looks like the theatrical versions in terms of coloring.

As a number of people have commented, going from FOTR into TT on the new EE set is somewhat shocking (at least for some). That can be chalked up to both the green tint and the contrast issues on FOTR. But the thing is, when one considers the new color timing on TT and the new timing on FOTR apart from the green tint and contrast, the films now look more consistent than they ever have, IMO.

However, the reason I'm pointing this out is just so that the differences between the Theatrical blu-ray and my "fixed" version of the EE image don't cause confusion. FOTR has been regraded from scratch and looks different. The green tint was applied after these timing changes were made.

Here's a sample of how Saruman looks during his conversation with Gandalf in Orthanc once the green tint is removed and the contrast is fixed. Keep in mind, this is using the exact same filter set as was used in the revised version of the Aragorn shot. No tweaks have been made to settings. These settings work on every image without adjustment, specifically because both the green tint and contrast boost are uniform throughout the film (which some might consider to be a highly suggestive fact on its own.)

Maybe it's just me, but your "fixed" version looks entirely too bright. They are in a room with low light and yet his face looks like someone has a spotlight on it.

Can someone please explain the difference between the screens for the "Extended Edition" and the "Extended Edition - Fixed"?

Are the new EE Blu-Rays green tinged or not?

Does it ruin the film?

The remaster was redone 100% by Warner altering every digitally graded scene that Peter Doyle and Andrew Lesnie had done with heavy use of teal and orange no where to be found in any of the original films, deep blacks causing underexposure that was never there in the trilogy until now and green filters used through an entire film unlike prior where it was only used for certain scenes. Numerous post in this very thread and others all over the net have mentioned the exact same problem, so I am not the only one seeing it. Though you would have to be blind not too since the new digital grading was done by people never involved with the making of the film in the first place.
Why do you keep bringing up FOTR? Never once was I talking about that.

You responded to my posting about each movie having different color schemes from one to the next. You told me I was wrong and that all 3 films had originally (before the BD release of the EEs) been consistent color-wise. In turn, I responded back, keeping to my original point the whole time. I never questioned the difference between the theatrical and the EE blus on FOTR. Everyone knows about the FOTR re-grading by now, and it was never my point.

Once again, I know FOTR has been re-graded. If you honestly think (and go back to the theatricals for untouched reference) TTT and ROTK ever had a color scheme consistent with FOTR, you're imagining it. On the same note, if you think TTT and ROTK are consistent with each other color-wise (as you claimed) you would be wrong.

No, it does not ruin the film. The green tint seems to be worse with people who have poorly calibrated displays. If you're display is properly calibrated then the green tint should be slightly noticeable at best.

I think if the film had looked like this from the start I wouldn't have been impressed to begin with.

There have been other films where the chosen color scheme has always bothered me and for that reason none of them is in my BluRay collection (the most prominent example is Die Hard 2, which I always found too red. Basically the same issue as here, just a different color.)

And I am stunned that so many people are readily giving up if a product does not meet their quality criteria. So yes, even if he signed it off this doesn't mean that people should accept it if they don't like it. There is a thing called 'customer satisfaction'. And I am not satisfied. Period. And I make that dissatisfaction known to the people responsible. That's the only way to effect change.

If Warner gets flooded with negative feedback it might have an effect. Doing nothing will most certainly not have an effect at all. Now do your choice. What's preferable if you don't like a product? Even a 5% chance of a remaster is better than 0%.

Could this mean that people who do not "notice" the green tint have an issue with their eyesight?

Hmmm.

Could just be from eye-strain.

I think this thread officially could not get any more tedious.

I really think the site programmers need to add an "ignore thread" feature

I wonder if you took the green out of that red, it would look brown.

If that is true, then I know why you don't notice the green tint

Respectfully of course.

Right, and they would be light red or dark red and so forth. The EE DVD box is closer to dark red because it has some brown in it. Have you never mixed paints?
