They were a Christmas tradition in my family. I think they chose December because of that. The family Christmas movie, and they're classic literature.

Heavily-hyped special effects blockbuster films like Avatar, Titanic, King Kong and Tron: Legacy were all released mid-December. Thanks to Avatar's success, distributors now aim for release dates around the 18th hoping to capture the same type of success. This year Mission Impossible 4, Sherlock Holmes 2, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, The Adventures of TinTin and War Horse all come out within 2 weeks of each other. Because Hollywood knows almost everyone will be on winter break and spending cash on something. |

I hope I'm not the only one who balled their eyes out at the end of Return of the King!
I forgot just how epic that movie was. Wow. Blu-ray makes it even better (plus wearing high-def turtle beach headset really let the sound through...those dragon whatevers that the black riders fly through the air with literally destroyed my ears). |

Watched the FOTR for the first time in its entirety. While I can mostly forgive the green hue (it is noticeable in a few scenes), I cannot pardon the excessively dark scenes in the mines of moria. So much detail has been obscured that it takes away from the film. One example: when Legolas takes down the troll with his arrow, you'd be left wondering what just happened if it was your first viewing. Where did he shoot his arrow? Where's the arrow? No expression on the trolls face, just a groan. Coppola did this with the Dracula blu-ray, but not to this extent.

Just finished watching TTT. The green hue is as prominent in this film as it is in the FOTR. Not sure why people have singled out FOTR. It is obvious that this release is color timed to be consistent across all three films. When I watch ROTK tonight, I will expect much of the same. I am ambivalent so far about this release. There are scenes where one character has the green hue, and the other character in the same scene has the full color gamat producing flesh tones! I don't know what to make of it all. My TV is a professionally calibrated rear projection 1080i CRT. It is very accurate and life-like.
So there you have it. Whether it is a stylastic choice or a timing error, the hue is present in the first two films to a great and observable extent. I have not compared this set to my old EE dvd set and I can't remember what it looked liked. What concerns me most is the consistency. In one scene, during the cross country run with Legolas, Aragorn, and Gimli, the elf was completely green whereas Aragorn was colored normally. Alternating from normal flesh color one moment to green is a little disconcerting. My apologies for making fun of the "geeks" before even seeing this release.
