Cinema has always had (at least until recently) certain level of opacity in the image, caused by the very nature of its mechanism, which of course helps to hide those kind of fine details.
But now the bluray not only allow us to have it in almost perfect clarity, but also to examinate more. |

Is it just me, or are the audio dynamics overall, and especially in the LFE, a little more consistent on this release than the EE DVD? I no longer have the DVDs, but I kind of recall it being more anemic in one scene, and then about to blow my speakers out the next. I'm not implying that it used to be more dynamic, it just seems to be more balanced on the blu-ray. Any thoughts?
Edit: Well technically, I guess I am implying that it was more dynamic. ![]() Last edited by frogmort; 08-03-2011 at 02:26 AM. |

Both the theatrical and extended editions Dts master audio tracks are far better, and as you say more consistent. Also the new extended edition is a 6.1 discrete mix rather than the 6.1 matrixed soundtack offered by the theatrical version. |

just got a sweet deal on this. My local F.Y.E. had a brand new set mis-priced at the used price of $71.99. I got my 10% V.I.P. discount which brought it down to $64.79 then I used a 30% off one used DVD coupon bringing it down to $45.36. With tax I paid just $49.90 for this set.

All reports indicate current blu-ray players have hardware incompatible with BR 100GB discs, so there seems to be a slim chance to see them used for films anytime soon. Since everyone would most likely need to buy a new player to watch them.
IMHO, you are missing out big time. But hey, you waiting for your perfect set, does not impede my enjoyment of the set that exists. I love it. |

But we all know this will not be the final LOTR EE on blu-ray. I know it will be a good while, but I would hope the next release will be done just right. |

In December 2008, Pioneer Corporation unveiled a 400 GB Blu-ray Disc (containing 16 data layers, 25 GB each) that will be compatible with current players after a firmware update. Its planned launch is in the 2009–10 time frame for ROM and 2010–13 for rewritable discs. Ongoing development is under way to create a 1 TB Blu-ray Disc as soon as 2013.[149] - source: Wikipedia There are ways to put movies like LOTR in fewer discs. And I really don't get why they haven't started already. Especially on TV series, having huge Blu-ray discs would help reduce the size of those ugly box-sets and it would be more practical. |

The very least they could have done was give us each film's extras on their own single BD. As far as I'm concerned this is nothing more than a repackaged EE DVd, only the movies are on the latest format. In the end, the answer is: money money money! Save money by using already created products, and gouge money by making costumers pay for more discs. |
