I'm just so used to the extendeds that if I watch the theatricals, they seem to feel edited to me.

I've watched both types numerous times and I have to concur that the extended s feel horribly bloated and unnecessary. the only one that really adds much as a whole to the story is the Two Towers. Otherwise I find the other 2 bloated and almost annoying to watch in their extended forms

As someone who had never read the books, I always found the theatrical versions totally confusing.

Plus the PQ on the EE's is so much better than the theatricals especially FOTR. I've never even noticed the tint, mind I haven't watched them 97 times to really tell the difference.

I will never watch the theatrical versions ever again. The extended editions are just superior in every way. Frankly put, they are better films.

I would be completely "out" of the movie if I were to watch any film in multiple sittings (yes I do have plenty of time ).
Pffft! That's nothing... I'm already fantasizing about the day for when I can watch both the LOTR Trilogy and The Hobbit Parts 1&2 EE's in one sitting!

Well, average out about 3 and a half hours for each film, and that's over 17 hours! Better pack a lot of caffeine.

I only meant one film at a time, more than that is a bit.. too much. At least, if I want to remember at least a few names.

As for if the EE's are better, have only seen the TE's maybe twice, so I can't really say if they are much better. The fact that Saruman's death is shown is a big plus for me, that really was odd when at the end of ROTK TE I remembered that Saruman hadn't appeared at all.

Whoa - Im exactly the opposite. The Two Towers TE is the best one in the series - perfectly paced, just the right amount of everything, and zero bloat. The Fellowship TE is rushed and doesnt work. ROTK can be watched either way since there are some solid additions and some waste.

I still stand by this:

Fellowship = EE No brainer
Two Towers = TE is better
Return of the King = EE is worth watching but the TE is OK too.

I guess pandering could get you a follower or two - though rather silly breakdown. More commonly the divide is pacing vs. additional story. What does one prefer. Tight pacing, or mass story. Which is what the Director and brainchild of these movies dealt with and he sure as hell prioritized the theatrical cut's during all but ROTK EE due to scheduling. One is not better story, or anything...And it's never been casual fan vs. book lover/Tolkien fan. That's too narrow minded. I love the LOTR movies as much as anyone however I prefer the theatricals as cinema for pacing reasons.

Which set was bought out first by a whole year? The definitive award winning ones. The EE is grand for the features are better and were comprehensive at the time (for DVD 2002-4) and fan favourites (again mostly coz they are packed with features) because of 'more LOTR is better than less'. Sure. And the novelty additions hurt the pacing of the directors primary vision - Seen by watching the directors cuts in direct comparison.

The theatricals are jackson's directors cuts that's why they get released first and of course who can ignore the fact that editing/sound/artistry of the directors cuts got Oscars for 3 years running - You can "I don't even care what he said" to your heart's content though that just makes you ignorant to facts?

Q: What's the definitive version of these films?

JACKSON: The theatrical versions are the definitive versions. I regard the extended cuts as being a novelty for the fans that really want to see the extra material.

I guess the debate continues, but it shouldn't over the bare facts.

The theatrical cut maybe the director's choice but in this case I still prefer the extended cut and won't bother watching the thatrical cut ever again.

Just redeemed the first digital copy (via itunes). I get an unknown error (err = -50). It says I should check my network connection. Anyone got the same problem? Maybe to many people who want to download the movies after christmas?

You're right, everybody else is wrong.

There you go, now you can stop arguing over something that doesn't mean anything

That's horrible reasoning.

PJ didn't cut the theatricals exactly the way he wanted into some tight masterpiece, he had to keep them under 5 bloody hours so people wouldn't revolt and would possibly come back to watch it more than once.

They get released first because they are shorter and therefore there is more reason to double-dip when the longer extended cuts come out. Simple marketing and economics for ya.

People are still debating this? Jackson himself said what the real directors cut is, and its the theatrical cuts.

I think the EEs are vastly superior, but that doesnt make them the directors cut.

Finally was able to order this along with Cyndi Lauper's To Memphis With Love DVD on Amazon. And all with Credit I've received through Trade-ins

I've never seen these movies or read the books, but I've always heard good things. So Hopefully the blind buy WONT be in vain.

Congratulations!

For someone not familiar with the books or even the movies, I would personally recommend viewing it as a miniseries. There are six blu-rays of just the movies, which are roughly about two hours each. Just take your time, and really focus on each one separately so you don't get burnt out on it. It's a lot to take in all at once. On the other hand, if you have a whole day to spare with nothing to do, it's a hell of a trip!
