You may have to wait until next Black Friday, for it was on sale for one day at Fry's for $39.99 and Amazon had it on sale for $49.99.

Just buy it, then. $70-80 for 12 hours of some of the best movies ever in fantastic quality with about 40 hours of bonus features?

Gotta decide if it's worth waiting for a year.

If you check the price tracker on this site you will see that from November through most of this month the price for the extended editions were $49.99. While its possible they won't drop again until black Friday the odds are pretty good that they will drop at some point before that time. Take advantage of the price tracker function on this site and put in the amount you want to pay and you will be notified when the price drops at Amazon. Amazon has weekly blu ray specials and gold box deals all the time so if you are patient you should eventually be able to find these for the price you want. Also keep an eye out at Barnes and Noble when they release coupons as sometimes it can work out to be a really good deal.

Another strategy is to flip the digital copies on eBay for $10. It cuts down the cost of the set if you dont want to gobble up HD space. My set came out to $25.

Finally was able to get time to sit down and watch The Fellowship of the Ring over the weekend and can only say WOW! That looked and sounded beautiful. Ready for the Two Towers next weekend.

Well the theater version IS only $25, shipped.

You probably got it for a good deal more. If you made $10 for it on ebay, you still ain't coming out ahead on the purchase of the extended editions. The fact is, you've splurged on both editions. I won't be joining you. I had the extended DVDs and while it was interesting to see what Jackson decided to cut, I agreed with his decisions. The theater cuts had better pacing and sequencing--an overall better experience, especially for repeat viewing.

Default DTS Issue

Watched Part 1 of ROTK last night. At 1 hour 42 minutes in, the sound went from DTS HD MA to only DTS. Only sound came out of the centre channel. No buttons were pushed, so I tried auto mode on the receiver but it didn't fix it. I switched it to THX processing for awhile and when I went back (10 minutes or so) it was back to DTS HD MA. Has this happened to anyone before? I did a quick search but couldn't find anything.

Well so far my total damage for both theatrical and extended editions is a whopping $20. Since I also sold my DVD sets on eBay for $30.

Default Theatrical vs Extended PQ

Can anyone give their two cents on the difference in picture quality between the theatrical versions and the extended versions? Are the extended versions significantly better? Only slightly? The theatrical set is dirt cheap right now. Getting hard to resist snatching it up.

I think everybody here will advise you against theatricals. Apparently dreadful PQ.

The PQ is far from dreadful... The only problem is that Warner used an old transfer for FOTR.

I had not noticed any problems. I will check mine in the next couple days. It is possible you have a defective copy. Can you just return it?

One dreadful vote, one far from dreadful vote. Anyone else?

NOTE: I don't care about the extra special features, and I won't miss the extended content that much. I'm most concerned with overall PQ.

Im in the same boat buddy, my concern is the PQ and AQ. because if its not really much of a difference, i will then jump on that 24 bucks box set instead

Here's my two cents I hope it helps: FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING extended version I preferred the cut, the PQ and the AQ, PERIOD. EXCLAMATION POINT! It was the only one of the three movies that I felt so strongly about. TWO TOWERS theatrical version I preferred and it was more an overly long cut than a AQ, PQ issue. RETURN OF THE KING, AQ and PQ about even (and the best of all three movies), depends how much story you want. I picked up a used copy of the extended version during the $49.95 Black Friday new copy time frame for only $39.00 so I had nothing to lose. But I am also keeping my ROTK theatrical version, which I bought individually until the extended versions were released. Here's two more cents, when you get the extended version each movie is on 2 Blu-ray discs instead of one. If changing discs bothers you, let me suggest getting the theatrical version. One last 2 cents: in the extended version box set the extras are on 9...that's 9, let me repeat 9 DVDs Just by putting the extras on 3 Blu-rays instead of 9 DVDs would have made the extended version the route to go in my opinion. I just thought of another 2 cents. Packaging. The extended edition is in a nice cardboard case with a magnetic clasp like the original Bourne Trilogy box set. Each movie is in a 5 disc attractive black Blu-ray case.
