I thought it did look just a bit more filmic and natural compared to the other two extended films and that is probably because it is a newer scan.

While there are some rather slight color differences on Two Towers and 'King, the main difference is with Fellowship where the color is dramatically different leaning toward a more teal push on the extended. However, in my opinion, the extended version is a far better, overall presentation on a properly calibrated display. I have viewed extended Fellowship on three different pro calibrated ISF displays and I have seen no major issue. Others will disagree.

All three extended versions are spread over two discs and as mentioned come from different masters which do give them an edge in detail and film-like presentation (especially Fellowship) over the theatricals.

It's actually an older scan (mostly) It's remastered from the original DI files (about 80% of the film was digitally graded, the rest was reportedly scanned during TT's post-production), whereas the old transfer is from the interpositive.

Only difference: the second release came without digital copies (which had expired by that point anyway).

I heard that it also came without the originally enclosed pix ...? I believe that the new, smaller one has the end cover with the map missing, right? I know on eBay, WB is selling the "complete" version (with the pix) - at least according to the picture they provide.

I ordered this from ebay last week and it does come with the pics.

I have no doubt it will happen but I think what we will see is a 3D re-release theatrically in a limited engagement like what was supposed to happen with all the Star Wars films and similar to Titanic. I think it's a safe bet to say this would happen in 2015 after The Hobbit trilogy has concluded its theatrical run. Makes sense.

Yeah, hence why I was mentioning the rumours. Seems unlikely that it'd get an Asian release with no announcement from New Line/WB.

I'd buy a Titanic-style (i.e. good ) conversion of the LOTR flicks in heartbeat. This Chinese version is not that, however.
